So I guess we’ve decided that everything that used to be called “machine learning” will now be called “ai”?

None of this is a “now” thing. It’s been that way for, what, at the very least, 15 years?

Absolutely not. I built and shipped two products between 2015 and 2019 with what we would now call "AI" inside, and product management and marketing spent months agonizing over whether the AI label was appropriate, or if we should just stick to describing it as machine learning. The big fear was that "AI" was such a big claim that consumers might question the credibility of the product. By comparison, no one today hesitates to claim that even the simplest of machine learning/algorithmic capabilities in their products or services are "AI"

Isn't ML a subset of AI?

AI is a useful umbrella term.
