At its inception the appeal was the "multi-stage optimisation system" and the virtual instruction set design (from https://llvm.org/pubs/2002-12-LattnerMSThesis.html)

At the time, I had a DSL I had written in C++, and I wanted to produce proper compiled binaries. I had started looking at the now defunct TenDRA - I was thinking it would be nice to compile to a "machine-independent binary" which could be converted to machine code on the actual runtime system. But soon after I found LLVM, and it seemed like a no-brainer comparatively.

I seem to remember that "machine-independent binaries" was Apple's first use of LLVM: distributing LLVM IR and having it be converted to machine code on the user's computer, back when they were supporting Motorola and Intel chips. And I think consequently that's how LLVM got a lot of its momentum.

I was closely involved in this controversy at the time and I can attest to the "loudest voice" problem where a small number of people magnified the situation far beyond what it needed to be. Definitely surprised to see a comment referring to it on HN more than 2 years on though!

It stuck out with me because it made me realise that many students were not at all emotionally well equipped to handle certain situations of adult life.

A problem here especially is how quickly anything done by the university is framed as an attack on the mental health and safety of students.

For example, in a recent survey, students were asked about their mental health issues. Examples of the university not being supportive enough were things such as 'I was not given an extension on an essay'.

These incidents make me realise that a non-trivial fraction of this generation of students really feels intense emotional distress to a point of needing counselling over things my generation would book under normal aspects of adult life. In these cases, there is also little self-reflection on one's own responsibility to handle such situations - everything is framed as an attack.

I've always found that the safest way to cycle in a busy city is to behave as similarly to a car as possible. If you're acting like a car and participating properly in traffic flow, it's far less likely that you'll get into an accident or altercation with a vehicle.

This is helped enormously by 20mph speed limits around the city where I live. It means that at a busy junction in the city center, I can accelerate away and get up to traffic speed as quickly as a car, if not quicker.

I did an internship at GoCardless last summer - Hiroki is an excellent leader and I'm not surprised to see him bounce back in such an inspiring way

I'm 17 and over the past year or so, I've made a bit of money doing freelance programming. The Freelancer / Seeking Freelancer thread on the 1st of each month is a really good place to start if you have marketable programming skills. I've found that even a quick rundown of your experience / skills is enough to get a few emails from interested parties.

17 year old iOS developer with a wide range of other skills. I'm looking to take on some freelance work to add to my portfolio of work. I have previously worked with companies such as Mostly Serious and Treehouse mobile, as well as undertaking my own projects. Any offer would be fantastic, and you'd be helping a young developer get a start in the industry. Feel free to contact me with any questions or offers at bruce.collie@blueyonder.co.uk Thanks in advance, Bruce Collie

You can buy a negative number of shares, resulting in you gaining ludicrous amounts of money very quickly (although my fraudulent purchases seemed to be removed after a couple of minutes.)

Yep I was emailed and tweeted this a few minutes after the first one was spotted.. that's fixed and deployed now :)

I'll look for you in the database and reset your dollars

2011 Mac Mini i5 2.3 with 8GB of RAM, as well as a custom built gaming PC. Both are connected to the same 22" LG monitor (via a switch), and I swap a wireless USB keyboard / mouse between them. I am a 16 year old freelance iOS developer, and as such, the Mac is my main use computer.
