What's wrong with men that they can't behave civilly to each other and to women? Especially prominent and intelligent men in leadership positions?

Seriously, this is the easy stuff.

You need to speak with your doctor first. You may be out of shape, you may have a vitamin deficiency, you may have something complicated. The answer is in a doctor's office, not HN.

Earlier posters have mentioned getting enough sleep. If you are affected by sleep apnea, you may be getting enough hours of sleep but it won't matter due to the affects of sleep apnea.

All the reputable medical websites have good articles about sleep apnea -- certainly enough for you to have an informed conversation with your doctor.

Most insurance plans will require a doctor to refer you to a sleep disorder specialist, followed by a home sleep monitor test, then a overnight sleep lab study.

If you ask around, you'll probably be surprised about how many people have been diagnosed with sleep apnea and are probably using a CPAP machine at night to address the problem.

My point is no one can know what your issue is. It takes tests, experience and knowledge of medical professionals to find out what your issue is. If you are open about your symptoms, your feelings and your concerns a good doctor will order tests. They might show something or they might show nothing. The doctor might consider it to be psychological instead of physical so you might be referred to a therapist.

Diagnosing humans is pretty damn hard and will take time. Stick with finding a solution.

Diabetes will also affect mental clarity and vision.

Don't trust their motives. It's more likely they want you because they can take advantage of you (due to inexperience) than anything else.

Don't trust "the founders" or their venture capitalist overlords. Put yourself and your education first.

Use your time in university to explore more than compsci; get a double major in business or design, study anthropology or archeology, learn about the last 3000 years of technology, use the university to make yourself smart and more able than you are now.

Trust yourself, you are your best investment if you take the opportunity to grow.

These questions are so heavily stilted towards white male start up culture it's laughable.

I noticed that. The question "if you got 100K for saving lil old woman", my choice wasn't there.

Pay my debts.

Also missing: put it in the bank (i.e. do nothing).

The answers to the "greatest satisfaction" question are also telling. They are all job/business related. There's not even a single "spend time with my friends and family" catch-all.

Yeah. Where's the "travel the world and live in a tent" option. My soul mate is definitely out there in a tent with mad cash in the bank watching a sunset from a mountain top.

Sigh

We'll never find each other unless s/he wanders into an internet cafe tomorrow before this rolls off of front page of HN...

Hurry soul mate! HURRY down the mountain!

You cam make up whatever hair-brained scenarios you want, but 1 in 3 people in the US have debts in collections. Or 77 million people.

So yes, "Pay off debts" is plenty sane, and yet not on there. And given the existing potential answers, gives credence that this is for rich white boys financed by rich mommy and daddy.

Oddly enough - no mention of this book. Great read - highly recommended.

Is this a different story than the one referenced by the link?

"It led to some unfortunate consequences, such as the episode in which he agreed to accompany a writer on a cross-country road trip, with the brain in the back seat. It made for an amusing narrative, but the account stripped dignity from both Harvey and poor Albert Einstein’s biomass."

For a while during a coding sabbatical I was a FOH sound guy. During another break I was a health food store manager. On vacation I'm usually deep in the woods. I probably do more of the latter if computers just didn't exist.

I was once a snowboard instructor, outdoors, athletic, people. Really fun. Pay was barely over minimum, but I had the time of my life. I spent plenty of time in the woods exploring.

Be prepared to walk away. If you want $Y find a job that pays $Y. If they don't offer you $Y, go find the next offer.

As long as you know what $Y is, it's that plain and simple.

The hiring manager or recruiter can't help you find $Y. You've got to be prepared ahead of time by using sites like salary.com and glassdoor.com where you can find the national and local averages for your skills and experience. These estimates help you sort out your market value. You also need to know what your personal budget is, what standard of living you seek, and what you truly value.

Do you only value money? Do you value time off? A great manager? Awesome co-workers? The stability of an enterprise? The excitement of a start-up? Does the CEO impress you? What is the estimate cash value of the benefits? Know what you value before you you start looking.

When you evaluate an offer it's real important to compare it. In other words, don't jump at the first offer! Having an offer letter or two in hand is powerful for you and the hiring manager too. And it makes walking away obviously easier.

Above all be truthful with yourself and with your potential employer - and expect the same from them. Do you honestly think that you're going to enjoy working for a company that is deceiving you from day one?

We are fortunate to work in a time where our skills are in incredibly high demand. You, as a job hunter, have more opportunity, advantage, and resources than the vast majority of the work force. You can use this privilege to achieve a happy life and successful career.
