This reminds me of a debate we're having in Sweden presently around architecture. Most contemporary architects seem to prefer buildings as big concrete blocks while most "common folk" would prefer something... less modern? A perfect example is the new art museum which you can see here https://www.svd.se/liljevalchs-tillbyggnad--ett-bankvalv-for.... I personally find it revolting, but am I then the person without taste?
I think much of contemporary art and architecture is stuck in a monocultural loop. There is no input from aesthetically-educated people that are outside the academy or architecture/art industry. It is extremely anti-diverse, especially compared to previous centuries where you had the entire swath of society working on a structure. Hence you’ll get things like that building.
And no I wouldn’t say you have no taste. Most aestheticians throughout (global) history would likely dislike that building. It’s only a recent phenomenon that such styles became so prevalent, largely out of ignorance or rejection of previous things.
draw.io is great for flowcharts and similar diagrams, but every time I've tried to mock up UIs with it I quickly find myself spending 90% of my time fighting snapping and being unable to do precise movements. Perhaps it's just me not knowing how to use it properly.
I find this interesting, Why is Parler a right-wing thing? Why do right-wingers feel the need for a different platform without censorship? Why doesn't left wing people feel the same need? I would assume both wings are equally censored?
For what it is worth, I'm not on either platform and I'm convinced platforms such as these are a net-negative for humankind. I understand this is super-political and may not lend itself to an online discussion.
Censoring people doesn’t magically solve anything, it just pushes those views and discussions elsewhere. That’s all that’s happening with Parler.
As to why the left doesn’t feel the same need, they are not censored as much on the major platforms as the major platforms are left leaning.
The catalyst for the recent Parler traffic was the Hunter Biden emails in which the New York Times were locked out of their Twitter for over a week for publishing a story. A lot of people viewed that as outright censorship that crossed the line so they went looking for somewhere where they could talk about it. That kind of censorship just doesn’t happen to the left because the right generally is more libertarian regarding free speech and permissive of speech in general.
Nitpick: The article on Hunter Biden which Twitter blocked came from the New York Post rather than the New York Times.
Furthermore, the Right being more permissive with respect to public speech is true, but rather recent. Historically, the Right tended to argue for the moral legitimacy of censorship whereas the Left tended to call any such effort a step towards tyranny.
Our current trends are very unusual, historically speaking.
Out of curiosity, in what way is Wil Wheaton incredibly toxic and how does he turn people to the alt-right? I did some googling, but couldn't find anything specific.
He also called PewDiePie "A Racist Piece of Shit Bigot" and while PewDiePie did use a racial epithet and there's no excuse for that, he did apologise profusely and regardless that's not a decent way to engage a stranger. https://boundingintocomics.com/2019/04/02/wil-wheaton-attack...
For whatever it's worth his introduction to mastadon was mired in controversy after he bleated calls to have a user blacklisted from the platform for the following joke:
> “Hey, did you watch that awesome show on Bofa last night?”
> “What’s Bofa?”
> points to crotch “Bofa deez nuts down here.”
And when Mastadon wouldn't (couldn't) blacklist the user from the platform he got viciously angry.
EDIT: His fans are on hackernews; please don't "downvote to disagree"; he is known to be toxic and curates blocklists of anyone who slights him in any way. If you disagree, please prove me wrong.
I understand you feel Swedish law is too harsh on this, but surely that is besides the point since Assange was in Sweden at the time of the alleged crime? It doesn't really matter if his actions qualifies as rape in any other country or not if they do in Sweden (which was for the courts to decide).
Generally a country will only extradite you if the crime alleged is also a crime in that country. Some countries also stipulate that the punishment must not be severely stronger than in the current country.
Generally that's the case. However, Sweden was trying to extradite him under a European Arrest Warrant which has no such requirement for the offence to be a crime in the country being extradited from and has much weaker safeguards in general. (This has caused some problems over the years.)
Not sure if this is a joke or a mistake since the English "glass" is "glas" in Swedish, but the Swedish "glass" is "ice cream" in English. The correct translation in Swedish would be "Jag kan äta glas, det skadar inte mig".
This is one of many silly sentences I heard while growing up, mainly from other Swedish kids who were learning English and finding silly similarities in words. So it's definitely deliberate.
Glas (glass) and glass (ice cream) have very different pronounciations that you don't really mix up. Glas has an extended a, glass sounds just about the same as in english.
To an Aussie bogan like me I'd pronounce the two the same usually, I have to think of the difference as how an American says glass vs how an Englishman/Aussie might say glass
I haven't had the balls to try speaking Swedish yet so haven't asked to eat some glass yet
The Swedish Bank ID also disallows copy/paste of passwords. When I contacted the company that builds the solution I got more or less the same response, "it is safer for normal users" which I didn't really understand. Highly annoying.
I have heard the argument that regular users often believe that copying and pasting passwords makes them immune to keylogging, so allowing that will cause some of them to keep a copy of their password on a plaintext file on their desktop where otherwise they would just type from memory.
Probably a dumb question, but doesn't copying & pasting protect against keylogging? The only key events being sent is CTRL+C and CTRL+V (or the mouse equivalent), and not the password keys themselves.
Obviously this is an extremely bad way to "protect" yourself (since you keep your password in plaintext on your PC), but it does protect against keylogging, right?
Maybe keylogging in the strictly literal sense, but I think most software "keyloggers" log the clipboard too. I suppose it would protect you from a physical keylogger.
Correct, it does foil key logging. However in general installing a key logging is harder to pull off than just copying all files from the machine in question. Of course it depends on which known unpatched security hole exists on the system at the time. However in general a program is more likely to be able to read arbitrary files.
This is deterrent for storing a plain text password in a file on your desktop. Frankly, if you are already keylogged your plain text passwords are already stollen.
