+1 for separating the two sports. Grip strength is rarely a limiting factor in weightlifting though.

For noobs it often is. Also other sports like pole, climbing, gymnastics, etc require much more than iron.

I don't doubt your intentions and it was nice of you to preface your correction with such reservation, but I gotta give a shout-out to descriptivism: if you can understand what's meant, maybe it's not incorrect!

That's a good point, and I don't disagree.

For some background, I grew up in northern Arkansas. I have a very pronounced Southern accent if I allow myself to, and I've always made it a point to carefully enunciate and use "correct" (read: "Standard American English") grammar because my native accent is one that's generally associated with lower education or even lower intelligence.

I credit my vocabulary with my reading everything I could early in life. I'm in my early thirties and there are still times when I have to ask others how to pronounce a word because I've never heard it spoken. I would much rather take the embarrassment of asking over the implicit judgement that people make if I badly mispronounce a word.

I find this site very helpful for many languages, including English:

I can understand what is meant from 8-bit recordings of a voice. But I'd rather have 16 or 24-bit recordings and even more nuance and information.

...and that's not even what descriptivism means.

Probably "Such a shame he decided to join ISIS." It doesn't have to be so either/or or black and white?

Somehow its becoming just that: 51/49 split everywhere

JSYK, Nimitz-class carriers have at least 200 officers, which gives a 16:1 ratio, but as far as I know this doesn't include officers from the air wings (which makes sense, since they have less of a "managerial / college graduate" type job. The math surrounding the 40:1 ratio obviously doesn't work out though, because an aircraft carrier is definitely at least 4x bigger and more complex than a DDG, which has around that number of officers.

Source: was on DDG. Looked up Nimitz-class numbers 'cause it seemed low (I know you weren't referring specifically to that type of ship)

Essays for transfering are very similar: "Why do you want to come here / why did you leave your last situation?"

Surely they'd like you to write about environment or purpose, but like with a first job as a kid, I think "the other place sucked / the classes weren't any good there" should suffice.

Actually I think for transferring the "why us" essay is fine, mainly because you're transferring for some specific reason and the "why us" essay just allows you to reflect on that reason and whether the new university will truly be any better than the one you're switching out of.

Consider the opportunity cost involved in writing such an essay: The time you invest to write such an essay cannot be invested into much more important things.

This is actively the point of college admission essays, though. Especially for post-high-school applications, each student only has enough time to write and edit so many essays, so requiring college-specific essays keeps applications-per-student lower. That raises enrollment rates per acceptance, which helps colleges manage the size of their income class.

The Common App didn't save time for most students, it let them do more applications via the same number of essays. So yeah - those essays exist as a transaction cost to weed out the uncommitted.

When Uber for pets became "seat alert app for pregnant commuters"

Definitely. However, it's also just the most important factor in weight control, with macronutrients, nutrient timing, and food composition playing lesser roles.

That's not really the reason that phrase was thought up tho..

Did you get the version with the new cover?

No, I just re-read my original hardcover from '96.

We share the same vice!
