last half of this article is poor analysis:
- makes assertion that 5.2 token inefficiency ruins long horizon planning? and yet it tops the METR chart for long horizon planning? half baked
- counts NPM downloads as authoritative when Claude code numbers hugely inflated bc GitHub actions does automatic CC download every time CI runs (vs Codex Compute cloud)
- revenue numbers look like ragebait to me
BlackRock & Wall Street funds/banks pumped Bitcoin for the past couple of years. They slowly started dumping 2 months ago, before the Epstein emails. I'm sure they had no insider information and it's a total coincidence. /s
TL;DW: GPU rental arbitrage is dead. Regulation hell. GPU prices. Rental price erosion. Building costs rising. Complexity of things like backup power. Delays of connection to energy grid. Staffing costs.
I like to hate on Sam Altman, but this a low effort hit piece. OpenAI has a brilliant team lead by one of the best in the field [1]. The ones who left are all but one not technical people and happened months ago. And the one who left wanted to focus scarce compute on RL, which is a good gamble but not necessarily the right move.

FWIW, OpenAI Codex is open source and they help other open source projects like OpenCode to integrate their accounts (not just expensive API), unlike Anthropic who blocked it last month and force people to use their closed source CLI.
