THIS - So true, I am a Ruby developer and could probably earn an extra 20k if I changed jobs tomorrow, however I will not sit through an interview being asked stupid questions like "What is MVC", "solve this big O problem" or implement some algorithm that I will only ever need to use during interviews & can then forget about...that type of interview is very telling of the companies work environment & the type of people you will have me working with.

I will send you code samples or show you my contributions to open source projects so that you know I can code, happy to discuss these until you are happy.

What is far more important is to find out about me, do you like me, can you work with me & tell me honestly about your dam culture - do you expect everyone to be at there desk at precisely at 8am, work a minimum of 80 hours per week? How is productivity measured? Do you expect me to attend some "team building" weekend nonsense when I could be spending time with my wife instead.

Do you have a wife / kids?

When your with the right women & have some kids, I find it is difficult not to want to get out of work to spend more time with them.

I have a wife and 3 kids.

I cannot figure out why more startups are not based in Walnut Creek - lots of office space, a great downtown & there are two BART stations within 5 mins + the contra costa transit center.

I cannot stand open plan offices, to many visual & noise distractions....even just people walking around distracts me (at they coming over to talk with me? I hope not!) Call me crazy, but I much prefer having a small / private office with the door open 70-90% of the time....it is not like I am going to be less accountable (git log anyone)

What part of the country do you live in? I bet it is not in the SF bay area ;-)

Probably not, but not everything is the Bay.

I'm moving to Florida. I plan to buy a house that is 30k. Small bungelow. Just me, the wife, the dogs and a cat. At the same time I plan on buying a 55k fixer-upper.

The first I should be able to pay in cash. The second, won't get bought until my current home sells. However, that second house, once improved (by us: we do flooring, plumbing, painting and simple eletrical) should value at 160k.

Once we move to the fixed house, we'll rent the other for 500 a month. Should be doable since my wife is currently in FLA in a 300 sq/ft studio at 500 a month.

I purposely didn't want to go to the Bay for this reason. I avoid California at all cost for this reason. My long term plan is to startup a tech firm, hire college grads, train them and try to keep them with the company for 5+ years. Hard, but doable. The nice thing is they can get 45k a year, and get a pretty nice home/environment that would be hard to beat. So we'll see, but again the Bay really matters in the HN echo chamber.

I enjoy reading about the progress Tesla is making, but I will not consider buying any electric car until the price is < $30k and I can at least drive from the bay area to Tahoe and back for a ski weekend on a single charge.

You'd need a pretty big tank to do that using a gas-operated vehicle; it's around 400 miles. My Accord V6 gets 250-300 miles on a tank, the Model S gets around 265.

One key difference is how low you'd be willing to let your remaining range drop. You probably wouldn't feel much fear driving around with 40 estimated miles left in the Accord. But I imagine 40 miles left in a Tesla might cause a little anxiety. The same-numbered range of a gasoline-powered vehicle is lengthened by the high confidence of being able to refuel within a few miles.

poor show FB - thumbs down!

I love the bay area, nothing else to say.

Do we know what is secure against the likes of the NSA / what encryption they can break today?

I understand this is almost impossible for us to accurately answer, just curious if we have any clues regarding their codebreaking capabilities in this regard.

Wow - I wonder if it would be possible to practically use this to commute to / from work every day.

I live a 5 minute drive from a tiny airport and it would be about a 30 minute flight to Palo Alto...if this was possible it would allow us to live further away....maybe even somewhere where home ownership is possible!

Exactly! Read my comment below on this.
