In the US, Avocado Mattress uses wool[0] instead of a chemical fire retardant.

> Google Voice cannot do shortcode SMS for places like Bank of America.

This is an important point for OP to consider. Twilio definitely can't receive SMS from US short codes[1]. When my number was at Google Voice I thought it could receive messages from short codes, at least in the recent past, but I ported it out so I can't test.

Don't know about BOA, but I've never had a problem receiving verification codes on my voice number which is my daily driver.

Planet [https://planet.com] | San Francisco, CA | Full-time, onsite

We're looking for senior software engineers to join our geo-platform team. Planet runs a large data processing pipeline that crunches terabytes of imagery per day downloaded from our custom, manufactured-in-the-office satellites. We run a cloud-first, API-driven architecture with the goal of enabling everyone in the world to access our imagery. Our ‘full stack’ runs from the spacecraft to our web tools, and there are enough hard and interesting problems to keep many teams busy for a long time to come.

Our mission is to image the entire Earth every day, and provide universal access to that data. A platform engineer not only builds public API’s and interfaces, but will be an integral part in the architecture and design of high availability, scalable, maintainable services to power our mission. If you're interested email stephanie@planet.com. We also have other jobs open here: https://www.planet.com/careers/

Remote possible for marketing positions?

I don't know, sorry, but I think the marketing team is entirely in SF.

Look for literature on "lattice organizations". There are a few case studies published about WL Gore & Associates and how they implemented it.

FWIW I have a .ws domain I registered through iwantmyname.com. Whois says the actual registrar is 1API GmbH.

I'm assuming you're talking about the Think on Mercer. Just to clarify, the Think on the Bowery is much smaller and has no wifi (and last time I was there had a passive aggressive sign about people using laptops in coffee shops).

Table 12 in the East Village (Ave A & 12th). Free wifi, power outlets, and it's mostly empty during the week.

In Brooklyn... reBar in DUMBO has free wifi, though it's more of a bar but seems pretty dead on weekdays.

As a point of comparison, NASDAQ handled trades for 750 million shares in 1.1 seconds for last year's Russell Reconstitution[1], one of the busiest equity trading days of the year.

Trading systems are trivially shardable by symbol or letter range; not so much help for a single symbol as in the case of an IPO.

I don't know to where OP is referring, but I've found Table 12 on Ave A & 12th to be a decent place to work. When I've gone during the day on weekdays it's usually half-empty, has free wifi, and the staff hasn't seemed to mind my loitering (though I do buy stuff).

> We do have Tumblr, Etsy, and Foursquare...

But would you know that if you weren't already plugged into the tech scene? I don't recall seeing a sign outside of Foursquare's building. Etsy had a handmade sign taped to some windows you couldn't see from the street unless you knew to look for it. 111 8th Ave doesn't have a big Google sign out front. There's no big Vimeo or OkCupid, etc., etc., signs outside IAC's headquarters. I don't believe Tumblr has a sign out front. In fact, the only tech company sign I recall seeing on the side of a building in NYC was Squarespace before they moved (I don't know if their new place has a sign). Compare that to walking around Soma or driving down the 101.

Most people probably have no idea there are well-known tech companies based here.

There are also a few well known blogs based here namely, Engadget and Mashable.
