I can't readily find the HN post but the math posted was solething like 'Each prompt costs a bottle of water'. Now think about the logistics required to get that amount of water. AI usage currently does not scale well.
Developers should now just use AI to beat the big tech co's at their own game. Prompt engineer products 10 times better than any offering from FAANG++. Even VC's aren't required!
I'm in the camp now that asks the question, if AI is so good, why are we still tethered to big tech? why hasn't an untrained human prompted a product out that is 10 times better than anything big tech has to offer. After all intelligence is free :-)
It's not even that. Why are trained humans who are now 10 times more productive haven't created new amazing operating systems, programming languages, game engines, browsers etc. We should have had a lot of outstanding products since AI hype started, but instead every company except the few doing foundational models seems to be just stuck and confused.
I fondly remember running beos5 PE on a computer with a amd k6 processor and ati tv wonder card. I think it was 400Mhz, maybe 600 and 192MB ram. Watched in awe as it purrr'd editing DVs from firewire and the turner. It was a glorious multimedia OS. BeDepot was awesome too! The ports for winamp (BeAmp), zsnes and genecyst/dgens were top notch. the hw support was great too. never had an issue with MS Sidewinder gamepad (gameport and usb versions).
I was PIP'd out within 48hrs after vocalizing this sentiment. Now they are selling an enslopified AI centric product. Employee moral evaporated and yet the powers be deniably (sp) claim everything is fine. Fun times.
