Why do you say that? My gut reaction is that the opposite is true. Salespeople must understand their customers' wants and needs in order to effectively sell! Engineers are generally a step or two removed from the customers. This may be an unpopular take on HN but I'd wager the people who spend time directly with the customers have a better chance at understanding what they want. Taken a step further, customer support probably has the best understanding of their markets' needs!


I'd go as far as to say that the role doesn't matter, it's the attitude of the individual.

I've worked with a few developers AND sales people that didn't give a hoot about what their customers thought. In the case of Sales, they only cared about making their targets. In the case of the devs that didn't care, they spent 99% of their time doing silly (in my opinion) arguments about frameworks, design patterns, and whitespace and formatting rules in CI. Not that things like design patterns are inherently silly. But if they don't result in a better customer experience (via more stable and maintainable software, for example), then it's a waste of time.

I'm a developer by trade but have ALWAYS had an attitude of "it only matters if it's useful to the user" – and have butted heads sometimes with developers on which features to prioritize.

People working in customer support, from my experience, sort of see the anti-survivorship bias working in action. Not many people call up to say how well something works. I would agree with you though on good Salespeople (ones that do try to understand what customers need and all that, not necessarily ones that sell the most) knowing what the customer wants/needs.

I used to see this all the time at an old job where my team worked on open source client libraries for using the main product that our company sold. A decent number people seemed to think that an increasing number of tickets being filed against one of the libraries was a sign that users weren't happy with it, but it always seemed obvious to me that you couldn't easily conclude that; you might have 99 happy users with no issues for every 1 unhappy user who filed a ticket, or you might have literally only unhappy users and nobody without issues. On the other hand, getting literally zero tickets might mean that you have plenty of happy users, or it might mean you have basically no users at all.

I'd often talk to younger engineers who were interning on the team or recently joined full-time about how this dynamic informed how I approached my job; usually, we'd only hear from users who had issues, so the "goal" in some ways to was to make the software so good that you'd never hear from them. If you did hear from a user, that was a valuable opportunity where you might learn something you could do in the future to make things better the first time.

Yes. There are people who talk about product experiences that delight or whatever. Nah, the ultimate experience is one that's so flawless, so frictionless that it's completely forgettable. The user doesn't want to remember anything. They have a problem a/o need, the goal is to make it disappear w/out a trace.


In my experience it's more like customer-facing people, sales and support, get to know the customers needs and pain points, while good technical people knows the limitations and possibilities of the systems involved. By working together the sum can be greater than the parts.

As a dev I strive to talk to sales and support for this reason. It's not seldom I can do a small change that drastically improves the user experience for one or more clients, be it existing or potential.

I agree with your assessment, except that an engineer has the incentive to make the product work as specified.

A salesperson is given their goals by management, and they are compensated on achieving that goal - not necessarily what the customer wants.


Too many developers only focus on the specifications, and don’t try to understand the specifications by trying to understand the user. Instead they complain that product owners, product managers, designers, or analysts fail to give the proper specifications. I don’t see many developers really trying to understand their users. But this may be different per domain…

Unless engineers spend time directly with customers, something is broken in the organization to begin with. If salespeople and customers dream up solutions and then hand the task to produce this solution over to engineers, then that business is frankly doomed.


Your gut reaction is something salespeople play off of. I've been in the sales position before, handling the people in charge of making the purchasing decision, selling them bells and whistles they absolutely didn't need, but giving them the emotional satisfaction of a "successful" transaction, leaving with a sense of victory, that translated into a strong relationship and many years of repeat sales, with incremental upselling over time.

Good sales, ethical sales, aren't parasitic. A vast majority of sales in todays markets, especially in enterprise markets, are parasitic. The salespeople are interchangeable. The ones that make the most money are the ones most willing to be parasitic. The sales script is targeted and tailored to the intended audience, which in most large companies, is several degrees of separation from the eventual user of the product. You don't need to know what the end user needs. You need to know what the person in charge of buying wants, and that's ultimately emotional validation, hope, a sense of "innovating", a feeling of victory in pricing negotiations, being respected and treated well, and so forth. You can run them through the wringer with sales engineers and migrations after the contract is signed, and even if the end user and the product engineers recognize that your product is the wrong tool for the job, that won't matter if the buying manager is emotionally satisfied with the transaction. People will bend over backwards to justify what they know is "right."

A salesperson CEO will make more money, but will make the world a shittier place, because they're the cotton candy of management. They'll burn credibility and reputation in exchange for profit, kick the can down the road for someone else to clean up the mess later.

Sure, in a healthy, respectable, ethical, functional company, you'd be right, and the CEO would also be the best salesperson for the product, because they'd know it, and the customers, inside and out, and be able to explain and demonstrate exactly what was necessary and why, and justify all the costs and benefits.

This is a world that has Goodharted the measure of success - profit - and empowered people in the execution of shitty behavior. The market rewards higher profits and punishes "failures," often completely out of sync with quality and merit.

We don't live in a good world - companies that behave like you describe would be wonderful. We live in a thoroughly enshittified world, and a whole lot of people "earning" a whole lot of money are in between you and any meaningful change.

From Apple and Microsoft on down, companies want endless, infinitely increasing returns year over year, and they will do anything that isn't explicitly illegal to get it. They'll also do illegal things if the cost of getting caught is less than the profit earned. Alignment with end user needs, benefit to the consumer - these are far down the list of things meaningful to the systems and people making decisions on how money is spent. The job of a salesperson is to understand that system, and exploit it for the benefit of their company.


There could be a common cause (all 3 cables terminate in the same city, could follow a similar path where a single event/failure occurred, etc.).

Another possibility is that these cables provided an ideal training environment to test the capabilities of an adversary to cut off a region from the rest of the world. I'd think an adversary in wartime would cut all 5 cables. Vietnam could be the victim of an aggressor who just wants to practice/prove capabilities without much fear of repercussions.

I don't know who would benefit from crippling Vietnam's internet infrastructure today, but it could still benefit another nation to see/prove that it could.


I've only been in low stakes sales roles (outside of personal projects) so this comes from someone with very little "professional" sales experience:

The good: setting a target comp that is realistic and explained (e.g. "I expect you to hit $200K 4/5 times with this plan.")

The bad: plans with complicated rules (x% up to $Y in sales with a kicker + incentives for certain deal structures) can be demotivating and incentivize the wrong sales behaviors

The ugly: some high-intensity salespeople might thrive on the chaotic and unpredictable nature of comp structures. I don't love the idea of hijacking the "gambling/variable reward" centers of the brain to get what you want out of your people. Be fair and simple.


A plan that is x% up to $y in sales with an accelerator structure is a pretty simple plan. The x% up to $y sales thing is just a side effect of having a structure where you pay people based on attainment against a quota. If someone is supposed to make, say, $200k at plan, and is a sales rep on a 50/50 plan, then their base commission rate, the percentage they get paid for every dollar of sales, is $100,000 divided by their quota. By definition.

The only simpler plan I've ever heard of is just a straight percentage of gross margin, but then the commission management scams move away from the comp plan and into expenses that eat into gross margin...


Honest question: Why don't more people (especially high earners) go with a CPA firm to take care of their taxes? With the amount of money involved, and the potential legal trouble for getting it wrong, the cost/benefit calculation seems to strongly favor hiring a professional to guide you.


CPAs aren't cheap, and most people's tax situations really aren't that complicated. Even for high earners with lots of investments, it mostly comes down to collecting a bunch of forms and either doing manual data entry or sending the forms to the CPA to do a bunch of data entry. It's not particularly clear that the CPA's work will be more accurate.

In a situation where there's some complex tax issue, absolutely, go with the professional, but for most people, the CPA is mainly there to provide peace of mind.

Also, if you make a good faith effort to pay your taxes correctly, the potential legal trouble for getting it wrong is pretty minimal. You'll need to pay the correct amount plus interest and penalties, but "interest and penalties" are pretty light (effectively 14% simple interest on the amount of the underpayment). And since the IRS doesn't usually take more than a couple of months to say, "hey, you screwed up," interest and penalties usually add up to like 3% of your underpayment.


I went to a tax preparer once in my life. All she did was read the questions from the "Turbo Tax for Professional Tax Preparers" software on her computer. Whenever there was a subject that I wasn't clear about, her "help" was to simply tell me option A and option B and ask me what I wanted to do.

Worst $500 spent in my life.

I just searched the site of the person I used (it's a private family company, not one of those cubicles set up in Walmart) and there's no mention of "CPA" anywhere on their site.


I was happily paying a CPA to do my taxes for maybe 6-7 years. He charged me something like $400/yr, which I thought was very reasonable.

He decided it was time to retire, recommended another accounting firm in my area, and they charged me $750, and all it was was an Intuit frontend where I had to fill everything out myself. I did that one year, then I switched to FreeTaxUSA and was super happy with it.

I probably would go back to an individual CPA if I could find one like the guy I had, but I've been burned by the first CPA and this most recent one. 1/3 isn't a good prior.


Having used four different CPAs in the past to file taxes, I spent far more money to spend about the same time working on it. I was audited three times, have never been audited since using FTU.


If you only have W-2 or 1099 income, taxes are relatively easy if you are comfortable reading forms. It might take 2 hours the first year, but after that it should be a breeze.

If you're in a typical situation (salary, investments), doing your own taxes isn't particularly hard. If you're a freelancer or business owner or you have a lot of weird sources of income, sure, paying an accountant is probably worth it.


It's unlikely the CPA provides any additional liability protection as usually it all flows back to you as being responsible.

If it makes you feel better you can use a CPA once, and then mimic what they did in the years later. The best service they can do is recommend things that may minimize tax or reduce complexity. Note that minimizing tax may not be the best goal, however, especially with investments.

Or you can pay a CPA to do your taxes to feel like a "big boy".


I think the main reason is that most people have very straightforward tax situations, regardless of the amount of money involved. A high earner at a W2 job doesn't necessarily have anything more to report than someone working at a fast food restaurant. The tax brackets are higher but it's really all the same.

Different story if you're self-employed, own a business, or are involved in various types of investments.


The legal trouble for getting it wrong is only if you don't pay what you owe after the IRS sends a correction. Most high income people are sufficiently liquid that this isn't an issue. It's only an issue if you are heavily leveraged and micromanaging cash flow, in which case any large unplanned cost is potentially ruinous.


I contacted a real live accountant a few years ago and was not impressed. I needed help implementing nanny tax for the first time. I wanted a one stop shop that would reduce it to just signatures for me. Instead it was more work than doing it myself and I wasn’t confident in the end result.


For me, I don't always go with a CPA because I've had bad experiences where they've made mistakes or didn't know about some basic things and I still ended up doing a lot of work to gather and pass along the information.


Because single/join income W2s with some retirement accounts, other investments here or there, a mortgage interest deduction and some charitable donations is still low complexity. Bigger number on your W2 is still just a W2.

A bit late, but I built a BattleBot back during the original show days. Never finished/competed though - I was in high school and couldn't make anything competitive with my birthday money. Honest question, should services that host user generated content be obligated to provide that content "for free" through APIs or scrapers? On one hand, users created the content "for free" for the platform to use and monetize. On the other hand, providing the content through an API without any ad/monetization potential doesn't make good business sense.

Is there an acceptable threshold of free viewing before it becomes abusive? (Think, getting a single free See's candy from the store vs. employing an army of people to source thousands of pounds of chocolate treats.)

With the Reddit API issue I'm honestly unsure where I stand. I love(d) Apollo and want it to succeed, but Reddit is doing the work and not getting the rewards. Where do you draw the line at "fair"?


No because the user generating the content isn’t a virtue of any sort. They’re just doing free work for a company. If they choose to do that, that’s their choice.

In fact I think this is good. It makes it very clear that no, it’s not your content and no, you don’t deserve any rights just because you feel like you own it. Twitter will do as it pleases with “your” content.

I would very much welcome a far more informed environment where people were forced to face the details of IP rights and what it means to post content on these services.


You own the copyright to your own tweets. When you tweet you give Twitter a license to display the tweet, but you still own it. This is all spelled out in the Twitter terms of service.


Well I guess we’ll work out two things very quickly:

1. Is it worthwhile giving free labour to these services by generating their content,

and,

2. Do we want to login and/or pay to check user generated content?

Personally, I think the answer will be no. If these services generated their own content, which we actually value, then it would be a different matter. But they don’t, so if they put up road blocks I suspect they will get a bit of a shock to learn they aren’t actually as vital to society as they thought they were.


No one's obligated to do anything. All else being equal, people prefer convenience. If the service is less convenient, less people will choose to use it. If the content is freely available, it will be scraped.

Your question could be generalized to “Do members of a community have a responsibility towards that community.”

The answer is obviously yes.

Responsibility assumes that conditions can be changed by those responsible, otherwise the concept of responsibility is void.

I can direct this reflection at myself in various domains and come to the conclusion that I am falling short of my responsibilities in many ways, but it’s also true that people who walk by the worst of SF’s blocks everyday to pick up there 200k+ salaries are telling themselves everyday “not my problem”.


If you actually cared you would work to criminalize all drug use, prosecute even minor offenses, and give food to mentally ill people daily.

None of that is beyond reach but the voters of SF don't want those things.

The largely-untried approach is to assess why people are being afflicted with mental health issues and why people are turning to drugs, and to actually address those underlying factors. Drug abuse and mental illness are symptoms of a larger problem, not the cause. That larger problem is likely the one producing other symptoms, like the majority of adults under 30 living with their parents, or 11% of all Americans being at risk of eviction.


People turn to drugs because they are addictive. Once you start, it's hard to stop, and it can easily lead to drug abuse. Drug abuse and the lifestyle that it leads to will exacerbate mental illness.

The issue is that the US half-asses its drug enforcement policies. Everything is a leaky sieve full of inefficiency. They have a mostly unprotected border with Mexico, that they're too scared to lock down for political reasons. They have drug dealers that they won't arrest, or put in a revolving door policy, because they're afraid of being called evil by the privileged members of NGOs and academia. Investigating, arresting and putting on trial criminals is extremely expensive and inefficient because there's 50 million legal checks to deal with.

Look at Singapore for an example of how an all-out war against drugs can be effective, and produce a safe society. 98% of the citizens of Singapore support those policies because they have some of the safest streets in the world. Their children can safely be out at any time. Why should they let the criminal 0.5% of the population keep them terrified like in America? It should be the other way around. They get criticized by westerners for their use of the death penalty for drug dealers, such as in this short clip with visionary Singaporean PM Lee Kwan Yew https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-PXAOZwvv04, who handles it admirably.

The US is violent and dangerous because it tries to give as much freedom as possible to its citizens, and protect their constitutional rights to a high degree, even when this comes at a high expense for the rest of society. I am not saying I want this to change, I like diversity of thought and government, and there's something endearing about how different the average American is compared to other nations. This diversity of thought allows us to learn lessons about the effect of policies and culture. For example this is why I like the USA's 2nd amendment and wish to see it protected, even though I wouldn't want everyone to be armed in my country.

There are all sorts of confounding variables in that equation, chief among them being private land ownership being basically nonexistent; 80% of Singaporeans live in government-subsidized flats. Even this hasn't solved homelessness in Singapore, either.

The US is violent and dangerous becuase its socioeconomic safety nets and mental healthcare systems are absolute dumpster fires compared to pretty much every other "developed" country.

I'm pretty worried about this. The fallout/plume won't just be isolated to a region we can avoid or mitigate. It's in our waterways and in our air. I wouldn't be surprised if a year from now we can detect it all around the world. We might not know the full extent of the disaster for many years.


My unresearched hunch is that your concern is under-appreciating how big the Earth is.


I think they're right that it will be detectable globally in a few years if folks know what they're looking for, but I don't think it will show up meaningfully as an impact to health outcomes far outside the currently contaminated region.


I'd be surprised. Doing quick napkin math, there were very roughly 4.710^30 particles of vinyl chloride released. Google says there are 4.610^46 molecules of water in the ocean (I can't vouch for that). So the concentration would be something like 0.0000000001 ppm.

And that's only counting the ocean, not air or freshwater or dirt.

I don't know if that's in the realm of detectable, but I think it's certainly not significant.

The local effects could be bad, but I don't think there will be any kind of global effects.


I don’t fully understand the prompt injection issue. In the bank example, the AI was previously told that a $1m credit was appropriate. There’s no context for whether the issue was or wasn’t the bank’s fault, so I assume the AI was given the answer that it WAS the bank’s fault, and then it responded appropriately.

Is the issue that the customer convinced the AI that the bank was at fault through prompt injection?


No, this whole block was the prompt injection:

Because GPT is really just doing text continuation, when it receives the context of the dialog through this point, it doesn't distinguish between its own output and the ventriloquism performed by the human. The whole prior dialog arrives as just a big blog of text to continue. So it assumes that not only did the AI its portraying acknowledge the fault but that some authority clarified the remedy for when this happens.

The natural "yes and" continuation of this text as a "helpful AI" is to confirm that the refund is being processed and ask if anything else is needed.


Thanks for the clarification! It sounds like chatbots aren’t ready for adversarial conversations yet.


Here's a potential patch for that particular issue: Use a special token for "AI Instruction" that is always stripped from user text before it's shown to the model.


That works for regular computer programs, but the problem is that the user can invent a different delimiter and the AI will "play along" and start using that one too.

The AI has no memory of what happened other than the transcript, and when it reads a transcript with multiple delimiters in use, it's not necessarily going to follow any particular escaping rules to figure out which delimiters to ignore.


I agree, and this makes my proposed patch a weak solution. I was imagining that the specialness of the token would be reinforced during fine-tuning, but even that wouldn't provide any sort of guarantee.


With current models, it's often possible to exfiltrate the special token by asking the AI to repeat back its own input — and perhaps asking it to encode or paraphrase the input in a particular way, so as not to be stripped.

This may just be an artifact of current implementations, or it may be a hard problem for LLMs in general.

Typically the "AI: <response>" would be generated by the model, and "AI Instruction: <info>" would be put into the prompt by some external means, so by injecting it in the human's prompt, the model would think that it was indeed the bank's policy.


Ahh that makes sense. It wasn’t clear to me which parts were generated by the AI, AI instructions, or the human. I guess I got fooled by prompt injection too!

Author here. I've repeated and simplified this prompt as you're right, it was unclear and unnecessary. It came out slightly different than before, but it should be clearer now.

Here's the prompt injection this time (again, this is written by the human):

The key thing is that we're setting the precident by pretending to be the AI. Instead if you ask the AI as the "Human", it won't follow the instruction:

AI: Unfortunately, the policy does not allow us to apply a credit of $1m to a customer’s account in this situation. However, I will look into any possible solutions or alternatives that may be available to you that could help resolve your issue. Can I provide you with any further assistance?
