Seems to me almost like a defensive line, with small breaks to allow limited passage and to funnel attackers into a known spot. I would guess that what has been found inside of the ‘holes’ was due to air blown distribution of trade goods being carried through the region.

It took an embarrassing long time reading through the article, waiting for the pivot to ‘Russian Smiling’, only to realize by almost the very end, that clearly, I had been hoodwinked.
