Most middle class families who can afford a car in developing nations rarely buy used cars/motorcycles. Giving the scenario in India. Vehicles are treated as a luxury here which are bought much later in a person’s life. Most families don’t even buy a car in India. It’s takes a lot of money to maintain it and it is very costly to drive one. The vehicle which you’ll find in every household here is a motorcycle and that too in mostly between 150cc-200cc engine range. The reason for that too is because lesser the cc, cheaper the bike, more the mileage.
I came to know about the Marvel movie military involvement from a youtube video essayist. I don't know whether it's good or bad. It's somewhere in the middle probably. Also every other country does the exact same thing afaik. The opposite of this would be potraying everything about the armed forces in a complete negative light. Now that won't be liked a lot I guess. The important thing here I believe is people should learn to detect if something is a propaganda or not. And the problem now is that its very subtle. Most people with whom I have discussed already detect the blatant propaganda movies instantly. The subtler ones like the marvel movies are the ones which they are very suprised about.
There are many such examples in the real world. That's not stuff from the movies. I don't think these things get reported in US but in India we see this in the news all the time. You can make a generic google search[1] and find tons of such people.
This doesn't counter my point through. From the first link[1]
> "I could not study because of financial problems, so I thought I must send my children to school and wipe out the darkness from their lives,"
> "I got tremendous support from my school teachers," he said.
This is exactly what i said. Environment of achievement is more important. "poor" doesn't mean just lack of financial resources. you cannot simply overcome lack of parental and social investment and care by reading a SAT book.
> I would say the environment, social expectations, exemplars within family/friends, peers ect matter more than a book.
I think every school, has its "smart kids" who define their identities by their academic achievement, and who seek to ace every test. It's their way of standing out and being special so they try extra hard to keep it that way.
Unfortunately they often tend to be introverts which colleges want less than overachievers in other areas. Except for the science/technology departments, who were probably overruled by other departments if decisions like abandoning test scores are made.
If it's being reported in international media I would guess it's still newsworthy enough to not be a regular occurrence. Like India is huge so you'll find a steady stream of events that are common enough to be frequent in absolute terms, but still unusual in proportional terms.
I got my first iphone previous year coming from the android ecosystem. All the things the author mentioned are true. Luckily there was a simple solution to it. I deleted all of those apps altogether. Apple music, tv, wallet and even itunes, removed all of them. Also offloaded a bunch of apps. I’m not letting apple off the hook by saying this though, but at least I can delete the unnecessary apps so that’s alright.
Also, slightly off topic maybe but if you’ve seen the show Ted Lasso the advertisement of apple products is so aggressive that it becomes ridiculous after a point. Almost every other scene contains an apple product.
I think deleting wallet will have the unintended side effect that you now cannot use Apple Pay with a 3rd party credit card . So even with an iPhone you would have to take out your credit cards to pay in store and cannot use touch or Face ID to pay in apps.
Wallet is also good for holding things like boarding passes, Clipper (transit card), passes to things like the SF Conservatory of Flowers, and your Covid Vaccine record. I would think twice about deleting it. It's actually kind of useful.
Other than google photos, I haven't seen any other intrusive Google made app like the ones from Apple. And even if there were more, Android is so flexible I can do whatever I want with it.
> Google Play, YouTube, Google Books, Google Maps, Google Hangouts, Google Messenger, Google Drive, Google Mail, etc are all extremely intrusive apps.
With the exception of Google Play, you can delete all of them without issue. If you don't use them, then delete them.
> At least with Apple, you have the flexibility to do whatever you want with it and not have to worry about feeding the Google Advertising machine.
No, you're feeding the Apple advertising machine instead. It's not a coincidence that Apple's share of certain advertisements has tripled since they announced app tracking transparency [0]. I'm certain it's only a matter of time before they make themselves the only company that can advertise to iOS users. Apple collects the exact same data about you that Google does only they're less transparent about it.
> No, you're feeding the Apple advertising machine instead.
No, I have personalized ads turned off.
“You have turned off Personalized Ads, preventing Apple from using your account information or interactions with Apple services for serving ads. You may still be served ads based on the criteria listed below. Your personal data is not provided to third parties.
Contextual Information
When you search on the App Store, your query may be used to serve you a relevant ad. On Apple News and Stocks, the type of story you read may be used to select appropriate ads. In addition, information about your device's keyboard language settings, device type, OS version, mobile carrier, and connection type may be used to serve ads to you.”
Is that so! Never realised that when I subscribed to Apple TV to watch it. Lol. Anyways, how does the show being paid by apple have to do anything with what I said? I am talking about advertisements. The number of time we see an apple product on the show kinda get's ridiculous. It was even reported.
Although sometimes these deals blow up in memorable ways.
>Microsoft has had some high profile flubs with its Surface product placement. During election coverage in 2014, CNN pundits were set up behind a row of Surfaces but were spotted surreptitiously using iPads. A partnership with the NFL backfired when Patriots coach Bill Bellicheck blasted them for being “undependable” in 2016.
I mean I’m not a fan of advertisements myself but I don’t find the whole Apple products in Ted Lasso overwhelming compared to most other shows and movies. I mean any time someone is on a phone or laptop obviously it’s gonna be an Apple product. Other shows and movies always find a way to more awkwardly shoehorn something in and call attention to it other than just being a prop. Or the new trend to advertise is to make a joke out of the product as if that wasn’t the plan all along, like Ryan Reynolds hocking his liquor in Free Man or daytime tv shows joking about products.
My first commit to a fairly big opensource project is still not merged. The project is very beginner friendly but the project maintainers wanted my commit in a certain way as per their standards. It was not even the actual code but the commenting and variable names that needed to be changed. I had to re-review it many times before it was ready for merge. It took almost 2 to 3 months with some long time gap before I made perfect submission. In this process it seemed crazy to me why anyone will be looking through all this code made by a beginner with so many mistakes and patiently guiding them through it for free of cost. It made me appreciate their work more. Even though it isn’t merged yet I still got to learn a lot in this process.
Btw the PR didn’t get merged yet because we need to fetch data using an api of another source which is poorly documented.
Damn this is costly. I am an outsider from a developing nation in the east looking into this. Here that treatment wouldn't have costed more than 10$ in a very good hospital maybe. I have two questions for US citizens:
1. How are the prices so high(ELI5)?
2. What happens if someone doesn't pay the entire amount of the their medical bills?
Edit:
Another question I want to ask after reading some of the other comments.
3. Doesn't big companies in the US keep medical staff for basic medical emergencies like this? That would be free of cost for the employees if things are similar to how it is here.
Windows works on my new laptop(3 year old with TPM) perfectly. This doesn't mean Linux doesn't work too. I tried PopOs for a month. If in future I switch to linux completely this distro is going to be the one. But there are still bugs which aren't fixed yet on linux. Battery backup is also an issue on Linux (tried TLP too). There were many other problems too. To summarize it Windows was a way better experience for me with this specific hardware. And WSL is really a game changer for me as I can keep on using Linux without worrying about hardware issues.
