Yeah because casinos and distillers already have laws regulating their use

This isn't about regulation. This is about people bringing a lawsuit against social media companies for their addiction. Problem gamblers and alcoholics aren't suing the casinos and distilleries.

Nice! I always bring razor blades (they're hard to buy on-location) and I've never had them taken.

Last year I started self-hosting and went with [MXRoute](https://mxroute.com/). It was pretty easy to switch and I really like their pricing model.

What's better about it?

The host actually gets RAM back after bursty workloads in the container thanks to memory ballooning. Containers also start up to 5x faster and `npm install` is also much faster because OrbStack uses macOS-specific APIs as much as possible.

The Orbstack dashboard is also something you'll actually enjoy using. It's a native Swift app that launches instantly, not Electron. You get resolvable hostnames for all your containers (though I use traefik instead). Opening a container's filesystem in Finder is another nice trick, I use that one now and then.

For one, it has dynamic memory allocation and is much faster and resource efficient. Drop in replacement. It also has a rather nice UI,

I don't want Microsoft's fingers all over docker -- if anything that would have accelerated the rise of e.g. podman

Buried in settings there's a way to turn off Apple Music (the subscription) and limit to only your own mp3s.

I tried to run both my music library and Apple Music subscription together, but found that when I let my subscription lapse, all my playlists got deleted, even the ones that just used my own music. Now I'm staying FAR away from apple music the subscription.

I don't think economics have squeezed out free time -- phones squeeze out all our free time.

Being on your phone doesn't stop you from waiting in line at the polling booth. A job does.

Having two or three jobs is not really conductive to free time.

In the US per official data ~5% have more than one job (and that includes lawyers doing consultancy for example) https://fred.stlouisfed.org/series/LNS12026620

So that would mean 1 in 10 families that are affected on average. Seems like a lot.

Hmm… 1 in 20 individuals are affected… I get the idea being 2 adults per family, one of them affected, hence 1 in 10 families, but I think its incorrect/misleading (potentially in either direction) to say 1 in 10 families. I haven't looked at the data about how many families are single parent (which could increase the impact per family) OR how many of those 5% identified as working multiple jobs are married (I wouldn't be surprised if more of them are unmarried, since a two parent family with both working one job might be expected to not need the additional jobs).

concerning

That is a self reported survey of households that doesn't lend itself to capturing all of the people. One, participants need to respond, which a busy and tired person isn't likely to do. Two, it doesn't define job, so if you don't think of your side hustle/gig work as a job, then you won't say it is. In the survey, if you did answer, and you do have 2 jobs, but you didn't work both in the exact week that you were surveyed, then you also aren't counted. IRS data, ADP private payroll estimates are much higher, but have their own issues.

I didn't read that connotation into it, but maybe in your social circles people have a problem with homeschooling?

> maybe in your social circles people have a problem with homeschooling

In general I think it's a very American thing, and considering the education problem the US suffers from, probably explains a part of that. Most other countries have very limited amount of homeschooling even allowed, because of all the drawbacks with it.

This is an understandable perception, but it reveals your lack of context. By and large, children in the US are educated in the public school system. Only 6% of children in the US are homeschooled. Now, there has been a relatively recent push into home schooling as a reaction to the education problems that you mentioned, but it is not the cause. I'd encourage you to spend some time researching home schooling outcomes in the US, if you're interested. (Keep in mind that the sample is mainly representative of engaged and proactive parents.)

The make your own cards are really nice for this. We bought a bunch of them and you can add any mp3s you want onto them. We even print stickers to put on the front.

Seconding this. We've made Daddy Mix Tapes, "Mommy Reads Stories", and other compilations.

Adding to the plethora of good ideas here: My wife bought these hanging tabs to stick onto the cards[1], and then strings a keycable[2] through them so my son has groups of them together. Yoto makes folding binders for them as well, but the keycable method seems to be a bit easier for our 5yo to handle.

I'm confused. Isn't the sharp decline in the graph due to the population boom?
