We all know companies that have transformed industries (e.g., Google, Netflix, Spotify) by analysing information about you and giving you personalised suggestions that seem to know you better then even yourself – but where is the equivalent for jobs? Netflix’s recommendations are not based on “back of the box” blurbs - instead, they extract traits from movies and match them to your taste, based on your interactions. So why are we still evaluating people based on their “blurbs,” i.e. their CVs?
We use a combination of unique behavioural data, machine learning, and of course efficient product development, to go beyond the CV and find patterns that humans would otherwise not detect (at least not at scale).
Our longer-term goal is to be not only a preferred destination for transactional hiring, but a compelling, intuitive guide to planning and executing your career goals.
We have just closed a successful fundraising round and are expanding our team! This is a super exciting time to join, as it’s still early enough that you'll help us shape the foundations of the platform and tackle some very interesting problems, yet we’ve already got enough usage, traction and data that you'll have a real, immediate effect on people's lives.
We are very serious about finding the right mix of talent, passion and ownership that meets our values, and is necessary for an ambitious early-stage startup. As we grow, the expectation is that you will too. All doors are open, from diving deeper into a technical speciality, to moving sideways into another area, to mentorship and leadership roles - in the end, it's down to you, your goals and your performance.
If you want to be a part of a big, ambitious story, let's chat!

[We've recently hired 2 great engineers for the other openings we had, and had some very promising candidates come from HN; I'm hoping 3rd time's the charm ;)]

To add to other people's anecdotal evidence, Trello is painfully slow for the board I use the most. Perhaps I over-use it - I have 27 lists, the longest of which has some 1500 cards. But it's slow to the point where Chrome asks if I want to kill the tab at least once every 2 days.
It works fine for other boards, so I assume it wasn't built with so many lists+cards in mind. But the fact it, it can be slow, almost unusable, at least for certain use cases.
Interestingly, I am tired of most projects declaring the language in which they were written upfront, especially when they are a copy of something else, "but written in ${language}!" - however, I am interested in the language a text editor is written in. Or, rather, the language it's extensible in.
I'm a long-time Emacs user, but have been growing increasingly tired of it. Whichever incarnation of Emacs I turn to, it just seems old-fashioned and outdated. And yet, whenever I try another editor, I end up coming back to Emacs. And one of the reasons is often the language (or ability at all) with which to extend it.
Each worm/worm gear pair reduces the speed of the motor by
1/50th. Since there are 12 pairs of gears, the final speed
reduction is calculated by (1/50)12. The implications are
quite large. With the motor turning around 200 revolutions
per minute, it will take well over two trillion years before
the final gear makes but one turn. Given the truth of this
situation, it is possible to do anything at all with the
final gear, even embed it in concrete.
Franklin Institute in Philadelphia has a similar gear reduction setup attached to a hand crank on one side and a metal trash can within a vice on the other side. Children (and adults) are invited to crank the handle and turn the gears. It takes months to crush each can which is then replaced.
That would be possible in theory, a few problems though:
You would need a flat surface to reflect light towards Philae, so the only appropriate surface would be the solar panels.
The solar panels are not mirrors however, they would probably only reflect about 5%-10% of the sunlight towards Philae. This is even assuming the solar panels are sufficiently flat.
Also the location of Philae is unknown (AFAIK), so there is the problem of where to aim the reflected light.
Finally the relative direction from Rosetta would presumably change as the comet rotates, which means the solar panels or Rosetta as a whole would need to be continuously aimed at Philae, using propellant and/or other energy.
We're hiring Python developers, QA engineers and DevOps engineers :)
The full job descriptions are at https://www.layar.com/about/jobs/ . But, in short, we're looking for passionate, talented engineers to help us shape the augmented reality landscape.
