“ For a while it was: “we don’t like Donald Trump”.”

I’m about as liberal they come, and so are many in my circle. But not one person wore a mask for the sole purpose of not liking Donald Trump and then using a mask as a statement. That’s a bizarre take.

Oh yeah, probably not causation. Definitely correlation. My point was that mask retention was greater in blue areas as compared to red areas.

It may have been absurd how quickly masks were given up in red areas (don’t know; wasn’t there), but our laggard approach in Santa Clara county certainly was and felt reactionary.

It is a bizarre take. This isn't a "both sides" thing. Only one side (Trump supporters) made refusing to wear masks or vaccinate a part of their political identity, specifically to spite "the left." Whereas every "liberal" I'm aware of wore a mask because of the pandemic, out of a concern for their own health.

Yeah, this is exactly what I meant. Wearing a mask (I guess, or not?) is a political affiliation. It’s stupid. I don’t claim either party, for what it’s worth (“no party claims me”; I’m happily unaffiliated).

Probably not as cool as everyone else’s but I made savonius wind turbine to learn more about the basics of wind energy. It was a fun jaunt!

This is pretty par for the course and the quality of writing largely makes sense, especially if you’re sending to an internal team of people you work with somewhat regularly.

He just sent a pretty complex and in-depth walk thru of a terrible experience in probably about 15 or minutes or less (not including the time it took to actually go through this process).

You write that this is more focused on personal productivity, yet everything from your copy to the features seems to be focused on teams.

There’s nothing wrong with that, but what I am taking away as someone who wants a personal PM tool from your positioning is that most future updates will be team productivity focus rather than individual productivity. Therefore, I shouldn’t invest in it as an individual.

Really cool PM tool overall tho!

Thanks for your feedback. We'll work on the website copy to make it more clear.

There are many upcoming features that solos will find helpful, like tags, custom fields, Google Calendar sync, etc.

Furthermore, we plan to have the option to turn off all team features so that you won't find the app cluttered if you use Upbase as your personal PM tool.

This is really cool! Obviously some work to be done here, and I see the Hacker News bump may have come a bit early even for an MVP!

The more accessible we can make this technology, the better. Best of luck on your journey, and I’ll be sure to check in!

Thank you! :)

“ My agent tells me that if I’d been willing to set aside my ethics and allow Audible to slap DRM on my books, I’d have made enough money to pay off my mortgage and save enough to pay for my kid’s entire college education. That’s a price I’m willing to pay.”

I have to be honest and say… I think I would be very frustrated with my spouse if this principle cost us so much potential financial freedom in other parts of our lives.

That’s not to say they shouldn’t do this. That would just be hard for me to swallow!

>I think I would be very frustrated with my spouse if this principle cost us so much potential financial freedom in other parts of our lives.

This mindset is a driving force behind our corrupt politics: sacrificing morals for money.

It’s not really a big deal though is it?

this person is just being a little weird and stubborn about this.

Audible members know what they are getting and choose to do so. Audible DRM is not a big deal, just use this Audible app, some of the arguments made in this article are invalid.

> Sacrificing morals for money.

HN user: Not really a big deal though is it?

If you've paid attention in the last century or so - it is a big deal in countries all over the world, there is a global political crisis of people sacrificing morals for money.

I agree, that sacrificing morals for money is not a good thing.

What I am saying is that putting your book on audible is not really unethical. It's not such a big deal, people on audible know how the system works and the DRM is fairly irrelevant for most people without tinfoil hats.

You're seriously making mountains out of mole hills here. There is no slippery slope trying to get your content on a platform that consumers actually use, regardless of the ethics of that platforms that's where the users are!

It is a big deal for some of us, author included. And you are being a bit rude by disregarding our opinion like that.

He could do the deal with audible and share a "free" version on the high seas.

That may depend on the terms with Audible.

I believe Doctorow is doing this for the reasons he outlined, but let’s be clear: his brand is all about being anti this kind of shit.

Selling out on his principles to make half a million in the audible store might still be a net financial negative if it causes him to lose credibility with the many people who buy his other books and pay his speaker fees.

No one would probably have thought about it or cared if he hadn't made a big fuss about it.

Maybe? You do enough of this kind of stuff and you’re going to lose credibility. Possibly your devoted fans let you off the hook for the first offense. But Audible has a pretty scummy reputation in some circles (as evidenced by other comments here).

Also, making a big fuss about it is content marketing, which works because of his brand. He’s on the front page of HN with a blog post that mentions a bunch of his offerings/plays up the quality of his audiobooks. More financial incentive to forego the Audible dollars.

I'm guessing Cory Doctorow's spouse knew what she was getting into. For all you know, it might have been her idea to eschew Audible. Plus she sold a company to Disney, so they're probably fine financially. Cory's mortgage reference was probably less reality and more just to illustrate a point.

I'm glad my spouse would be unhappy with me if I sold my integrity for money. It makes for a great marriage, knowing we have each others backs and will be loyal to one another and can count on one another.

It’s relative to how much money you have already. A quick search for “Cory doctorow net worth” suggests he is well-off enough to be able to turn that down.

Heck, in this article he mentions spending $50k on recording a previous audiobook, which looks to be the cost of two years at Harvard. I’m pretty sure he’s got a lot of financial freedom already.

How much of your frustration in life is because other people’s spouses convinced them to take the money?

That kind of sacrifice is a negative sum game: when we all do it, we’re all worse off.

Yeah, I’d be tempted to write in a character at the start of each book that just so happens to remove DRM from an audio book.

Doctorow still has a mortgage? (Like, and not because the interest rate is so low that he’d pay it as slow as possible? And even then, why use that as your standard of “having a lot of money”?)

I guess I overestimated the returns to fame?

CPS is very often put in a “damned if you do; damned if you don’t.” Miss _one_ case, and the state is on the hook for millions, a case manager who makes $47k a year at 60 hrs a week with an oversized case load takes on an incredible amount of liability.

My wife worked as a case manager and I worked in a group home from 19-21. It was appalling how cruel and terrible parents (or other relatives) could be. No matter what socioeconomic class you’re in, child abuse is not as uncommon as one would think.

And we haven’t even touched on vulnerable adults….

This particular experience is not an ideal situation. But also, I am concerned by how many commenters believe CPS and their related agencies are completely incompetent or unnecessary.

Yes that's insane but such insanity is hardly an argument for CPS making sane, reasonable decisions. It seems to point in the opposite direction.

But also, I am concerned by how many commenters believe CPS and their related agencies are completely incompetent or unnecessary.

Something like CPS seems necessary but that need doesn't imply that current CPS is competent. It seems like you have a grossly incompetent and abusive system that continuously defends itself by pointing to how necessary it is.

>Miss _one_ case, and the state is on the hook for millions,

Doesn't the state and its agents have qualified immunity?

It gets a lot murkier for CPS and its varying contractors unlike law enforcement.

Well, you should be concerned that so many people are hurt by an organization that pays your family. It’s harder for you to see the problem. Believe the people who are describing the abuses, and he willing to support meaningful policy change to protect families and give them a more appropriate degree of rights in family court systems.

Our family is no longer financially reliant on these gov't agencies. It wasn't feasible to work in an environment where the county targeted (again) the health department she worked for budget cuts, which led to higher case loads, higher insurance premiums, longer hours and virtually no chance for raises in the next 2 years at minimum.

Voters chose to not invest in agencies that protect the most vulnerable in the population. As a result, those who remain are overworked, more abuse gets through the cracks, and even the best in this group start to break or start giving up on caring. Pretty big bummer.

Makes sense--glad she was able to move on.

I understand being missionally invested in the opportunity to work on the bad cases, but, unfortunately, under-funding is almost the only defense voters have against malicious or obtuse family services agents, or bureaucracy with no emergency stop button.

There was valid points made that were forward but certainly didn’t strike me as angry. And I agree with the sentiment. I am weary of more and more startups and companies like Google these days. I can’t rely on a lot of them.

Is there an explanation on the differences between universal and GA4? I’m finding it difficult to understand how GA4 works.
