Last time I met John Maddog, he had a similar idea, already implemented and the whole "ecosystem" used it's own cryptocurrency. Project Cauã or something. Because I can't seem to find new news, I'm guessing that it's perhaps going downhill.

No not really.

Vala has an own seperate transpiler that generates C code from Vala code.

Cello uses the normal C preprocessor to generate C code.

Actually Vala generates GObject code, which fundamentally has its own "type system" and uses reference counting.
