Thinking of this in a proportional sense is the wrong comparison. It's a settlement - therefore it needs to be compared to how much damage a non-settlement was going to cause FB.

More and more people are going to flee to Singapore.

Anyone know what the tech scene there is like?

Oh that's a great idea. From a one-party state to another one-party state. Though of course those two can't be compared, I admit.

The Tech scene in Singapore, to answer your question, is about 10x what it is in Hong Kong. The big two are Grab and SEA though, which might not be for everyone. Tons of startups and a sizeable Google office (among others) as well.

Try Taiwan or Vietnam - well, Vietnam another one party state, but a burgeoning tech scene and HUGE population of like-minded hackers.

Taiwan is Taiwan: democratic version of China. I've sung its praises too much here, but it is a superior alternative to those looking to involve their business in the Mandarin speaking world.

> Try Taiwan or Vietnam - well, Vietnam another one party state, but a burgeoning tech scene and HUGE population of like-minded hackers.

Where can I find those communities you mentioned in Vietnam?

Well, meetup is a good start https://www.meetup.com/topics/entrepreneurship/vn/

Just hit one or two, get in with the local expat crew, and it'll all fall into place from there. Facebook groups sometimes a good way as well. Saigon seems to be the main city for it but Hanoi has crews as well, and they're also spread out somewhat in some of the other cities.

It's a one party state whose entire raison d'être is to be economically competitive, so I wouldn't worry.

I've wondered if what San Francisco needs is a Rudy Giuliani type mayor. Someone to come in a shake up the status quo with valid right leaning polices when it comes to crime.

Rudy Giuliani certainly deserves a lot of credit for cleaning up New York City--as US Attorney when he dismantled the Mafia. Whether his policies as mayor were effective is highly debated.

Agreed. But it's not like the current policies, some of which include blatantly not enforcing laws, are working.

Giuliani was also a prolific mayor when it come to building housing.

I don't think any right leaning or even centrist political candidate in SF could withstand the inevitable smear campaign that far leftist groups would organize against them.

Left wingers are very much in support of housing. It seems like you've come here to grind a political axe. In general it's better to make good arguments in your first comment rather than reveal them in striptease fashion.

https://news.ycombinator.com/newsguidelines.html

I've only donated and voted for liberal candidates. Also, my comment explicitly said 'leftists' which is different than liberals. Argument was also in direct response to a comment. Good day to you~

I didn't say anything about 'liberals'. Why are you trying to put words in my mouth?

Crime started to drop precipitously 2 years before Giuliani was elected, during Dinkins' tenure.

Everyone’s favourite article on the topic seems the lead-crime hypothesis by Kevin Drum in Mother Jones. It’s very interesting and there have been updates too. https://www.motherjones.com/environment/2016/02/lead-exposur...

The US crime rate went down when Rudy was mayor, because in part the population age bubble of the baby boomers among others got older. Crime rates went down all over the us, conservative or liberal mayors.

A thing that also happened with the police doing almost certainly illegal frisking of people on the street in nyc was that they disproportionately were doing this to minorities - this is hugely damaging to our democracy. I think conservatives are mostly white people and they don't see it happening to them,or if it did rarely they were treated better because they are probably white. If you are a young black man and this happens many times it really hurts your psyche, makes you mad.

Absolutely some policies went too far.

But the current status quo of not enforcing laws isn't working either.

> I think conservatives are mostly white peoples and they don’t see it happening

It should be noted that while “minorities” (i.e. black and Hispanic people) were disproportionately targeted by stop and frisk, 53% of hispanic people polled supported the program (similar to the 57% of white people who supported it). Indeed, 25% of black people polled supported the program: https://www.blackenterprise.com/nypd-stop-and-frisk-poll-rac.... When you account for the fact that people who vote are older and more conservative than the general public answering polling questions, it’s quite probable that a significant majority of Hispanic voters and a large minority of black voters supported the program. It’s disrespectful to all those people to say that only white people could support the program.

I personally think the program is unconstitutional. But there is a real danger in assuming that “minorities” have liberal policy views. Their voting with democrats because of certain key issues obscures the large representation of conservatism within minority groups. People tend to pretend like black conservatives don't exist, but almost as many black people consider themselves conservative (22%) as white people who consider themselves liberal (24%). Hispanics, meanwhile, are evenly split between conservatives, moderates, and liberals: https://news.gallup.com/poll/245813/leans-conservative-liber....

Views on marijuana legalization are a good example: https://www.people-press.org/2014/04/02/section-2-views-of-m.... 55% of whites, 60% of blacks, but only 43% of hispanics believe marijuana should be legal. Twice as many hispanic people (39%) and slightly more black people (23%) support jail time for minor marijuana possession, as compared to white people (19%). (Remarkably, Hispanics as a group support jail time for minor possession at higher rates than Republicans as a group.)

Likewise with mandatory minimums, 30% of whites, 33% of blacks, and 41% of hispanics view reducing mandatory minimums for drug crimes to be a "bad thing." Hispanics are much closer to republicans (45%) than to democrats (29%) on that measure, even though hispanics overwhelmingly vote Democrat. You see similar results with the death penalty, with almost half of hispanics supporting it, and a third of black people.

What are the downsides?

What are the downsides of this?

It looks like founders and VCs get the majority voting shares by default. It's not clear if it's good for the company or not, but it helps founders to pick it as the stock exchange to go to.

The slow vesting shedule makes a lot of sense though.

Which it should be noted happens in practice a lot with tech companies hitting exchanges already, so it's not a huge change from the norm.

Where did you read about the slow vesting schedule

The interview with Eric Ries is a bit clearer than the article, but it still misses a lot of details.

It could be a medium-sized waste of resources.

The central thesis is somewhere between "controversial" and "improbable".

To wit: current markets being too focussed on the short term does not align too well with Uber, a company bound to lose money for at least another three to five years under the best assumptions, being valued as it is.

opening up the opportunity to take money from a whole new source, by accepting money from unsophisticated investors who dont understand what they are getting into and losing liquidity on their investment at best and losing their money at worst

As long as investors don’t get bailed out, who cares? I would have loved to invest in Uber, Lyft, etc back in 2014 when I knew they were going to be big. It also would have sucked to invest in Yik Yak, but you win some you lose some. As long as they are selective enough to not list outright scams, I say let people take their own risks.

How is Messenger Bloated?

Its not like facebook applications haven't had insane amounts of duplicated resources and crazy amounts of gigantic libraries/frameworks: https://blog.timac.org/2017/0410-analysis-of-the-facebook-ap...

Not sure if its relevant for messenger or not, but I wouldn't be surprised if messenger was overly huge for the task its performing.

It is a piece of bloated app that adds all your FB friends to your messenger friend list automatically and constantly spams you to contact them on anniversaries etc. I deleted it the same day I downloaded it.

that's weird, i never get prompted to contact anyone except for the default thread that opens when you have a new friend, which admittedly i don't like

sometimes on HN I get the feeling that anything more than a command line application written in Rust or in C may be called bloated

C isn't hipster enough for HN.

I wrote a custom ARM assembler that generate prolog that uses genetic programming techniques to optimize the interface. I've found the best interface to be my set of 8 multi-colored LEDs driven by a custom build arduino system that talks serial. Unfortunately I have to use a usb-serial adapter these days, and then a usb-c-to-usb-a adapter. My dongles have dongles.

can't tell if you're serious, the beginning sounds crazy but the end is a mundane practical issue

Can't all of this be done via Stripe Atlas for $500?

Yes, Stripe atlas can be a pretty good choice for some of this. With that said, if you don't need anything fancy, and just need a basic LLC for yourself, you can save money (and also choose your state of incorporation if desired) by using some other legal services, which will be slightly cheaper, as all they really do is file the documents for you, which is pretty easy to do on your own as well. But Stripe atlas obviously comes with more than what those services offer in case you need it.

Stripe Atlas doesn't accept very many companies. I signed up and was rejected... even though I use Stripe for processing. Somehow Stripe feels they are taking on a greater liability for your company beyond processing.

This too was my immediate reaction.

Are there situations where Stripe Atlas would not be the best choice?

(Also curious if anyone has experience with Clerky or Gust Launch, which are also mentioned in the article.)

Also used Clerky, it's great. Just fill out a form and give them a credit card and it handles all the paperwork, generates incorporation documents & bylaws, files with the relevant secretary of state, and gives you instructions for what to do afterwards.

I've talked to a couple lawyers since that are familiar with the Clerky paperwork, and they said that legally it's pretty solid as long as you're doing something fairly standard. If you've got complicated ownership structures (converting from an LLC, founders quitting or joining after incorporation, spinning off IP that might not be yours) you probably want to talk to a lawyer, but for the standard situation where a bunch of friends get together, can all agree on ownership percentages, and start a company from a clean slate, Clerky's great.

Stripe Atlas won't help you start a company with ethics baked into its mandate so that's worth considering. Clerky will help you to incorporate as a Public Benefit Corporation if that is of interest.

https://www.clerky.com/public-benefit-corporations

I use Clerky and can only recommmend it.

Does this functionally change anything though? Both countries are so massive businesses will already be targeting each location. Furthermore, the respective countries are both planning for scale.

How does taxes factor in with Lambda school? Are they taking pre or post tax income?

You pay on a percentage of pre-tax income.

Wowza. People are gambling on tax rates of every level?!

You may be able to deduct the payments as either an education expense or an unreimbursed job expense, but I haven't dug into the tax code to find out for sure. I'll be the LS people know though. :)

Unfortunately you can't deduct the payments. There is some potential legislation around that, but it hasn't been pushed through yet.

This is accurate.

Buy a showroom car, and they'll usually give you anywhere from a 10-20% discount, depending on brand.
