That is what I have always heard in engineering school. FTP transfers replaced the magnetic tape.

What are they referring to with the phrase "open source microcontroller"? I must spend too much time with ARM cortex parts, I had no idea there are popular open cores.

Probably the arduino - with the open source libraries and such.

Some movements at http://opencores.org/

Why not? It will be in the social security death index.

Why are math departments still around? My engineering professors insisted on teaching probability and linear algebra.

I can't wait until Facebook issues a press release instructing people to not log in as their parents when said parents are unable to change their profile picture or other basic tasks. That is such a bother.

Have you tried Horde 4? It is much better than version 3 and is not affected by this issue.

Tried? Yes. Failed? Miserably.

I've happily used Horde for well over 5 years. I was really really looking forward to Horde4. Once it came out, I immediately tried it. Tried to install it, that is. I failed. The lack of clear documentation combined with the dark magic of php-pear kept me from migrating. And even when I did get it installed I was unable to comprehend the UI. It completely changes depending on what 'application' you're using. There is no consistency.

E.g.: The calendar in Horde4. The interface completely changes into nothing you've ever experienced. It's unrecognisable from the rest of Horde4.

I migrated to RoundCube + Plugins for calendar (caldav+davical) and addressbooks (carddav + davical) and have been a happy, android syncing camper ever since.

php-pear dark magic is nothing compared to installing the framework libraries from git! The pear.horde.org instructions fail to mention that you must install horde/Horde_Role before any of the applications.

The UI is currently undergoing a rewrite, but the default interface can be forced into the traditional view in the Horde configuration.

Perhaps the market will change to be more like the console market, where the hardware is sold at a loss in exchange for future revenue from other sources. I would look for phone manufacturers to start asking for a percentage of app sales.

Have you bought a phone lately? The telco pays for most of the phone in exchange for your agreement to use their service for two years.

Sure, but now phones generate other revenue than just the service contract. You don't think phone manufacturers would want some of that?

They want it, but they're not going to get it. In any case, for the time being, app store revenue is minimal compared to device revenue; last year the whole sector took under 2 billion dollars in sales globally, only a third (less sales taxes etc. in some cases) goes to the operator.

More like, have you bought a phone in the last ten years?

Notes on Philadelphia: Most photos on the regional rail lines are by locals, even on the northeast corridor. Tourists in Fairmount park are not making it much further than the zoo and art museum, which is unfortunate because there are lots of great areas north of that. I would have expected more activity in both rivers due to the tours and rowing that take place. Penn/Drexel campuses are photographed much more than the Temple campus.
