> He's still kind and thoughtful, but he's going to post as tomhow from now on

I laughed at this phrasing. Welcome tomhow!

> “New control laws were required for this transition maneuver to work seamlessly and efficiently.”

Coooool.

I just saw one of the first tiltwing VTOL prototype planes the other day from the early/mid 60s. It seems it didn’t get any commercial takers as it was too new/untested.

A Canadair CL-84 “Dynavert” is on display at the Canada Aviation and Space Museum in Ottawa.

Bob’s such a great example of forging one’s own path and finding one’s passion.

He failed grade 9. He went to university but dropped out by second year. Traditional learning models just were not for him at the time. But he showed that communicating science was much more about the human element; much more about the communication. He might be more like Canada’s Carl Sagan.

I’m sure he’s great, but that CV sounds much more like Bill Nye (Boeing engineer turned comic turned science communicator) than Carl Sagan, who was an active scientist and researcher his entire career while also doing science communication. Sagan was precocious and started college early, but after that he seems to have had a relatively traditional scientific career path until he became famous.

> Unfortunately, poop and urine is one of the main reasons for soil contamination by Perfluoroalkyl and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS).

That’s not true and that’s absolutely not what those articles say.

Biosolid fertilizer ≠ “poop and urine”

Each article refers to general sewage "sludge" which is the primary output from wastewater treatment plants. That "biosolids" mix is far removed from "poop and urine" and has many other things added to it (eg for treatment) and taken out.

From your [1] > The E.P.A. is currently studying the risks posed by PFAS in sludge fertilizer (which the industry calls biosolids) to determine if new rules are necessary.

> She said regulators should focus on curbing the PFAS entering wastewater by banning use in consumer products or requiring industries to clean their effluent before sending it to treatment plants. “There’s not enough money in the world to take it out at the end,” she said.

To actually use poop and urine effectively, it has to be separated (ahem) "at the source" and processed appropriately before any PFAS can enter. The Rich Tree Institute of the main article are focused entirely on the urine (ahem) "stream" and demonstrating how it could be viable as a fertilizer.

There will be a few things you’ll want to do to minimize nitrogen loss. As soon as it’s out, it going to start turning into ammonia and as a gas, it will escape. (The ammonia itself has useful properties, and it’s why urine has been used for all sorts of processes in history(. Making the ‘outputs’ fairly acidic or basic will help keep the nitrogen from leaving in that way. Add vinegar so that the low pH will reduce the bacterial activity that creates the ammonia. Add wood ash to create a very basic environment (high pH) (you should actually get ammonium as a precipitate). Vinegar should also help reduce smells. You might wanna store it for a bit before depositing. (Unless you’re doing the direct deposit method).

Are you saying to add vinegar to the urine and then wood ash to the urine?

Sorry! Those were the two separate options: either high pH or low pH. Adding vinegar is prob easiest and it’s what Rich Tree does.

Asteroid 2024 YR4 (the one that might hit Earth in 2032) also made close passes in 2012, 2016, and 2020. …

This + sports analytics. So much of sports is about slightly different outcomes of related scenarios. There's not much difference between a home run and a flyball caught at the wall. But the data shows something very distinct and ignores the other almost-as-likely outcome. Amb values has the potential to give new ways of analyzing performance and outcomes.

(What I'm saying is get a big sports team to fund you)

You’re right. But even better than trying to get a compatible PCI card, find an older MacBook Pro that has built in FireWire ports and use something like iMovie to direct rip the DV content. Unfortunately, it has to be done in real-time even though it’s digital data. I haven’t heard anyone use a high speed tape drive for them but it would be theoretically possible.

Also, that setup is a pretty good way to digitize Hi8 analog tapes. And I think you can use some of the camcorders as analog to digital converters of an analog video stream (eg, an attached vcr).

Sounds daunting compared to my limited experience:

Friend brings over MiniDV camera and a tape, and asks if I can transfer it to a PC.

"I don't know, but we can try!"

It took longer to rummage through the cabling collection for the right FireWire cable than to get it working, plugged straight into the front of a Q6600 box running Windows Vista or 7, with whatever software Microsoft included by default.

Even the tape transport controls worked perfectly from the GUI on the PC.

But your box had a FireWire port? There’s no good way to convert FireWire to current protocols/ports (eg USB).

Old macbook is just a cheap all in one solution with FireWire inputs and software processing g.

It had two FireWire ports -- one on the sound card, and one on the motherboard. IIRC, the one on the motherboard was used for the front panel connector.

And maybe I'm old-fashioned, but the last thing I think when I need to connect up some old gear is "I have just the answer! I'll buy a whole 'nother laptop!"

I mean: They still make PCIe Firewire cards in factories every day -- or at least, they once made enough of them that plenty are still kicking around for not very much money.

And it may be 2025, but they definitely do still make desktop computers (with industry-standard expansion slots, even!) in factories every day.

Yeah that’s a huge pain in the ass, I was hoping there would just be some mini dv to thunderbolt adapter. Oh well, probably won’t bother.

There is a way to go from mini dv to thunderbolt. Apple made adapters for Firewire to Thunderbolt 2, and Thunderbolt 2 to 3. These can be chained to do what you want. See this video/channel for more details. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yT0oDYbqwwk

This only happens if one searches for “google” in the Bing search bar. This is less deception and more a fun dig. Try searching for “askew” in google.

Entirely changing the format of the results page based on a keyword match for a competitor is very much deception. Although they've been doing similar for years when you search for Chrome as the very first thing you do on a new install and there the entire screen is basically full of tricks to try to make you stay on Edge and pushing the actual search results down so far you need to scroll. I guess they've got away with that a long time, they probably don't think anyone will care.

It all feels a bit like the "I'm feeling lucky" button from years ago on Google when it was kind of the default choice for everyone because back then Google actually cared about putting the most useful page at the very top...

Remember when one of the best tricks was searching "French military victories" and pressing "I'm feeling lucky" took you to a page that looked exactly like the google results but said "No results found, maybe you meant 'French military defeats'". Classic stuff!

It also only lands because Google has so thoroughly genericised its brand as to be unrecognisable at a glance.

No, this is 1000x more deceptive than the askew thing.

Is there something I'm supposed to be noticing with "askew"? Seems the same as cattywampus.

The page gets a CSS filter applied that tilts it by 1deg.

    <style>
        body {
            transform: rotate(1deg)
        }
    </style>

> It's good to see more studies come on this but it's not exactly news. Researchers have known for quite some time now

A growing body of studies signals consensus - that’s newsworthy. This ties two specific factors together rather than any general metabolic syndrome.
