This just in, the creator of UNIX wants to deactivate your MacBook. Just yours. Sorry, hope you understand.

Was UNIX open source?

No, but XNU (Apple's OS kenel) is based BSD which is open source. In fact XNU itself is open source even though its BSD licenced so does not have to be. https://github.com/apple-oss-distributions/xnu

There even seems to be an open source variant of the OS https://www.puredarwin.org/

And that has to do with the price of tea in China how?

You asked whether Unix was open source in the context of a macbook. The Unix derivative used on a Macbook is, indeed, open source.

No, I asked if Unix was open source. The macOS kernel is a BSD derivative. BSD != Unix. If the comment was to hold true, they should have said BSD wants your MacBook.

> The macOS kernel is a BSD derivative. BSD != Unix.

BSD is derived from Unix source, so it is Unix. Most BSDs cannot be distributed using the Unix name because of lack of trademark permission. However, MacOS is an officially certified Unix: https://www.opengroup.org/openbrand/register/

Yeah I'm hoping it comes like that to all markets. Where I live, there are a lot of roundabouts that I would make turn signals on the wheel a nightmare to use properly

I just like their cars. It's not a political decision.

Any support of any of Musk's companies is now a political statement whether you want it to be or not.

Musk goes out of his way to make it political. He makes sure there is no separation between his politics and his companies. It is what you're signing up for when you buy from his companies.

Nah, I don't make political statements with my purchases. You're thinking too deeply about it. There must be separation because I don't experience politics when driving Tesla.

There is no separation. You're expressing politics whether you want to or not.

Musk has politicized his public image and by extension his businesses, especially because he is the marketing department and public face of those businesses.

The only way to avoid it is to avoid buying his products.

Which politics exactly do you say I'm unknowingly expressing?

This sounds like a very US centric point of view to have. Most people outside the US, like myself, don't hold these views of the Tesla brand.

If this was the lens everyone saw the world through, they probably wouldn't buy any mainstream tech including the digital device you're typing this on.

> Which politics exactly do you say I'm unknowingly expressing?

Musk's.

> This sounds like a very US centric point of view to have.

Musk is now part of the US government. He describes himself as "dark gothic maga" and "First Buddy" to Trump.

> Most people outside the US, like myself, don't hold these views of the Tesla brand.

Here is Musk directly interfering in UK politics. He is calling for the ouster of Kier Starmer, a change of leadership in Reform UK, and the dissolution of parliament among other even more extreme things:

https://www.forbes.com/sites/tylerroush/2025/01/04/elon-musk...

Here is Musk directly interfering in German politics. He has called the chancellor an "incompetent fool" and backs the AfD:

https://www.theguardian.com/world/2024/dec/20/elon-musk-clai...

https://www.reuters.com/world/europe/elon-musk-wants-weak-eu...

Here is Musk advocating for the submission of Ukraine to Russia:

https://www.npr.org/2022/10/04/1126714896/elon-musk-ukraine-...

Here is Musk advocating for the submission of Taiwan to China:

https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2022/oct/08/elon-musk...

If he hasn't mentioned your country, don't worry. He'll get around to it eventually.

When you buy Tesla you are now buying into Musk's political actions whether you want to or not.

Thank you for the links to sources. Already aware of some but others were definitely news to me.

Musk has already tried to interfere with my country’s politics on X (not listed above) but all I’m saying is I don’t link those political opinions to the Tesla brand and I don’t think it’s fair or healthy to say that another person holds the same political views as the CEO of the product they purchased.

Nobody decent is pro-child labour, rare earth mineral mining or buying diamonds from conflict zones so to say by buying a product of those practises is outward support of those practices isn’t right. Where do we draw the line?

This is not weak supply chain auditing. This is direct, blatant, in-your-face foreign interference into the politics of other countries. There's nothing subtle or nuanced about it.

Tesla owners will be perceived as Musk supporters (whether they are or not) because Musk is an attention seeking narcissist. He has made himself synonymous with the Tesla brand so buying Tesla means supporting Musk.

Here is the brand damage Musk has done to Tesla in Australia:

https://www.abc.net.au/news/science/2024-08-22/tesla-reputat...

Here is Musk farcically calling the Australian government "fascist":

https://www.sbs.com.au/news/article/elon-musk-doubles-down-o...

There's an election happening this year in Australia. Musk will inject himself into it. He won't be able to help himself, especially not with his new "First Buddy" status:

https://www.abc.net.au/news/2025-01-03/musk-could-turn-focus...

So I'd guess that Tesla will take another reputational hit this year in Australia.

You might not feel it yourself but you get assigned it by others anyway.

Well, that’s not a very good way to live — assigning other peoples’ political alignments based on their vehicle purchases.

Does anyone here use Hazumi for HN? I’m looking for new features to add and would love your feedback.

https://apps.apple.com/ie/app/hazumi-for-hacker-news/id16702...

I'm still on iOS 17 so can't

Great news, but I'll be waiting until 8.1 to upgrade my apps

Any reason why you'd wait? Rails 8 has been running in production for awhile at a few of the major shops and I'd assume it's pretty stable.

Rails 8 is very stable from what I have seen

Congrats on the launch! What's unique about this product compared to other competitors like getwaitlist.com?

Thank you! A few things: 1. We're a more affordable for new founders. All features are available in the free plan, even Zapier, API etc. (it just comes with a small branding) and if you want to remove the branding, the pricing just scales with you while you grow your list. 2. Feature-wise, we are building a toolkit for founders here. So we already have some other things like email campaigns. So you only need us to also send product updates etc. to your users, without paying for and using an extra tool. 3. Of course it's a personal opinion, but user experience is extremely important to us. We believe it's that we've created the simplest way to create and customize your form/page and emails - with or without technical knowledge.

Have you used getwaitlist.com? Was there something you were missing?

For Hazumi News on iOS I allow users to anonymously opt into keywords they are interested in and perform basic string matching on new posts on an hourly basis to determine who to notify.

Scrolling down from the top of homepage is pretty choppy on my M3 Max in Safari

> I noticed that backup jobs are failing en masse

Have you checked if you brushed against their ToS somehow or exhausted their usage limits?

It definitely wasn't a usage limit since I have fewer than 200 customers. I have a verified app, which has been up and running for almost three years now.

I suspect it happened either due to accessing my account from an unknown IP or creating and editing a Profit and Loss statement in Google Sheets, which normally shouldn't trigger any alarms, but algorithms move in mysterious ways...

accessing your account from another part of the world can trigger the kill switch.

What's baffling is that I received no communication whatsoever, not even from Google Cloud.

I already had low expectations from Google, but this is unprecedented even for them.

wtf

Is this documented somewhere? Can one notify them ahead of time?

Here’s one I’m developing for iOS if you want push notifications or summaries of linked articles
