Fyi: john Crudele reports on employment at the nypost ; he gets inside info from census (which he blasts) Years ago he reported on plunge protection team(ppt- market manipulation) that i was skeptical about. I no longer am.

The article pulls you in making you think there is some subtle dynamic. Then the first discovery is psychological safety. Very important but not that insightful because everyone is looking for this environment. I wonder if Alan Turing's enigma project had a psychologically safe environment?

Now this notion of psychological safety is interesting because it makes me think of our larger environment (too much a leap!) that it's similar to our personal safety ( perhaps requiring more surveillance?). It reminds me of Hayek’s notion in "Road to serfdom" opining that submitting to less freedom for more safety will make you worse off. I do have to say I would probably submit to more safety - it's so much easier.

I'm not registering to read full article but the other mainstream articles list curbing terrorism & crime as the main reasons. None mention the possibility of cash withdrawl in a negative rate environment. (Can anyone verify?) But I find it hard to believe we'll go negative since it would destroy the money markets, & possibly pensions.

That's starting already:

Man can you imagine getting a letter like this when you're 75 ? What are these people to do ?

Having worked in a trading company for some time, investing in anything not backed by a government, especially a retirement money, seems as a bit of a reckless idea to me.

It seems this system requires the car to be stationary while charging but it would be like using cars as electric trollies. Hmmm I wonder if cars on hwys could have an automatically deployed arm for contacting a third rail or overhead wire?

Note the title is opposite of what they recently did.

Selling treasuries has large ramifications for the US. and a warning that we should think about getting our financial house in order (congress will not heed this, only the bond traders will force "austerity" as they did during the Carter administration) China's 2% devaluation of the renminbi a couple weeks ago was the trigger for the current market turmoil.

Chinese financial tactics are probably aligned with the goal of inclusion into the IMF SDR: <IMF Executive Board Approves Extension of Current SDR Currency Basket Until September 30, 2016> http://www.imf.org/external/np/sec/pr/2015/pr15384.htm (Was it retribution for not being immediately included? Maybe not, but they still are the major holder of US treasuries.)

Then they wouldn't need as many dollars to buy their trade goods. Chinese rise is inevitable and we need to do serious things to prepare for living beyond our means.

"Back in the day" as a hobbyist, after staring at the crt someone exclaimed "well do something!" I was quite amused. I recall a story where the idle bill gates had to tell (mom?) " i'm thinking". The best is Feynman recount of debugging a radio circuit where the awed owner tells someone "he fixes radios by thinking about them!"

The singularity line took me for a very mild loop & didn't distract from the article. It's disconcerting that carter can be taking advantage of the situation given all that Harper represents(maybe it takes a law degree:(

It opens with: "riverrun, past Eve and Adam’s, from swerve of shore to bend of bay, brings us by a commodius vicus of recirculation back to Howth Castle & Environs."

and ends:

"A way a lone a last a loved a long the riverrun,”

and in between: bababadalgharaghtakamminarronnkonnbronntonnerronntuonnth unntrovarrhounawnskawntoohoohoordenenthurnuk!

I’ve been waiting for a good translation. maybe burgess??

This reminds me of the mass market hi-q puzzle although this puzzle probably inspired the hi-q cross design. I was never able to solve it as A kid but later wrote a 6502 program to try to solve it. I toggled char's on the monitor to see if it was running or off in never never land ( relative jmps are murder). After 10, 20 , 40 ?? Minutes it stopped. It hadn't crashed. I dumped the memory. It was the solution! Prolog seemed cool when i saw it but life in IT drudgery took over.

Google drive would solve drunk driving problem but a drunk driver deactivation system could be developed immediately. (I'm sure there would be legal issues to implement it!. And tech issues: ie if passenger drunk dont deactivate)
