It's a good idea to point to the HN guidelines from time to time. I just wonder if there was a specific incident that made you submit them. Just curious.
Edit: oh, just answering to which incident. In the comments, iamelgringo talked about submission guidelines, so I'm guessing that's why he resubmitted them here, so yeah, I meant the discussion.
Kinda confused. The user who submitted that Ask HN is an older member, so they technically should know the rules. Or perhaps you meant the discussion taking place?
Any startup that is working on an easy mobile payment solution. I'm excited for Jack Dorsey's new project and would definitely put some money in if I could.
Can you be more specific about what an easy mobile payment solution is and why you're enthusiastic about it?
To me it sounds like a system in Australian and New Zealand called mobile EFTPOS (I believe Europeans have something similar although it's called something else) that allows merchants to do transactions wherever they can get GPRS coverage — does the US not already have something similar?
I got my Pre last week. I really like the UI and the idea of multitasking. However, I already sent it back because of the spacebar and the power button not working properly (aparrently not only an issue with my Pre). From my experience from using it for a few days all I can say is that the battery life really sucks. You can't get through a day with moderate use of email, twitter, phone...
I am also a little disappointed by the build quality. It just does not feel smooth when you slide out the keyboard. I, however, did not experience any issues with the calendar. It takes some seconds for every app to load but I did not see a big difference in the loading time of the calendar and the other apps.
Now I have to wait two weeks before I will get it back since they would not just give me a new one. Reading this article really makes me wonder if I made a bad decision buying the Pre.
In my experience with mobile development, disk I/O is especially slow. So the calendar load time might depend on how much data you have saved in your calendar.
It is really fascinating to see the oppositional reactions to this idea. It seems like either people love it or they are really scared (like me) and cannot understand why other people would like it. This is also reflected in the poll results on TC (so far).
There's another point of view, which is found e.g. in David Brin's "The transparent society": privacy is inevitably going to be more or less a thing of the past pretty soon, so the challenge is to find a way to make that not end up benefiting the people with power and completely screwing the people without. Brin thinks it can be done...
I admit, my comment was a little short-sighted in a way. However, I think someone should be an active member of a community like HN in order to make such a judgement (i.e. not appropriate for HN).
Beyond that, the guidlines say not to post such comments and I strongly agree with it. Should've just downmod it in the first place...
This was a totally disappointing read. Like stated in the other comments, most of the techniques are sketchy and questionable. Furthermore, there is almost no advice on how to reach your targeted customers / business partners.
Most of the techniques appear a little desperate and wouldn't impress me as a potential customer or business partner.
I thought the same thing. It's probably because the rankings come from Alexa and Google Trends: the former is useless, and the second is unrelated to number of users.
