I really want a good alternative to Google Photos. Jottacloud is getting pretty close, but there are problems when using it for photos and backups at the same time.
My understanding here is that you can just configure this to your own liking. If you don't like lambda, just (macro fn lambda) and you're set. The names chosen by the original writer doesn't really matter when you can reconfigure the language.
I love the possibility of chatting, but the chat bubbles are a bad user experience everywhere. The best solutions I've seen just opens a small popup window with the chat inside, and that's it. Native cross-tab-chat, can easily keep an eye on the chat while doing other things, etc.
This is not a good point at all. Having to rely on third party applications (without any good way to discover them) to provide something that is taken for granted everywhere else is a horrible user experience!
It's the same if you want to use an external, non-Apple, completely normal HDMI monitor - use a third party application to make it use the default (for the monitor) refresh rate (60 Hz) and resolution (1920x1080).
It's the same if you want to use a completely normal USB computer mouse with a scroll wheel - install a third party application in order to make scroll wheel work like you expect.
And pretty much all those third party tools that are required to turn a Mac into a system that is actually working and allowing the user to be productive costs money as well.
I've never had issues with default resolution/refresh rate on any external monitors, including a non-conventional 1080p 240hz monitor that I use daily. Mice work normally for me as well, and you can change the scroll direction in system preferences if you want.
I understand how this works, but it's not better, especially not for multi monitor setups. Switching between three dev-tools, two browser windows, five terminals and an editor or two makes the Mac way a horrible way to work:
First, select the application that you want to use now. All windows from that application, across all monitors are now brought to the front. Then, you switch to the window you want to use. Most of these windows have no clear way of communicating to the user that it is active, so you have to look at each of the available windows to see if it's active or not.
Let's say that I have a monitor with three terminal windows on. I don't want to close them or minimize them, as I will need them again shortly. Now, I want to open a browser window above those three terminal windows, so I open it. Now, I want to move a single one of those terminal windows on top of the browser window, while keeping the other two below the browser window. Nope, not possible. On Mac, I have to use the mouse to pick the right terminal window to achieve this.
This looks great. I have previously written a small GUI application with Qt where it's just a slider and a text label, and when the value of the slider is changed, a command is ran and the label updated. In quickly hacked together Python/Qt, it's 71 lines. It seems like I can cut that down quite a lot by using this. I will have to test it. Thanks!
> its such a shame so many video games still only support MS
This is very true. It's a shame, but the only way to help this change is to create the market for video games that support other platforms, for example Linux, as well. Help make it profitable to develop games for Linux
There are already quite a lot of games on Steam that support Linux, especially if you add Wine/Proton [1] to the mix, where 78% of the top 100 games have a score of "Gold" (runs perfectly after tweaks), "Platinum" (runs perfectly out of the box), or is running natively on Linux. This means that you are no longer missing out on the huge library of games you were missing out on just a few years ago.
It's the same for Norway. This website report 400 cases, 4 deaths and 22 recoveries. These are quite far off from the actual official numbers. The official numbers are released once per day at 18:00, by the Norwegian institute of Public Health [0], and VG (a newspaper) are keeping the numbers updated [1] with reports coming from municipalities and hospitals around the country [1]. The last official numbers (from yesterday) were 489 cases, 0 deaths, 1 recovery. The last numbers from VG are 642 cases, 0 deaths, 1 recovery.
I had a year of French at school, and my teacher kept saying all year that no matter how much or little we learn from his classes and exercises, as long as we are able to say "I don't speak language X, do you speak language Y?", everything would be so much easier when dealing with strangers in foreign countries. It also helps a lot to add a "please" and "thank you".
This piece of advice helped a lot in both Germany, Ukraine, and Russia.
It doesn't always work though… I just had an issue with a Spanish airline (of all things I would assume all their employees would have to speak some English), where the session expired, the online payment went through but the ticket reservation didn't. I called the number and asked if Se habla Inglès o Francès? and no, I had to use my broken Spanish to sort it out. The lady was very helpful though.
