With this you can refer to a machine in the IP6 space without setting up any DNS yourself. In some situations a hostname works where an IP-Address doesn't. They gave one such example: Getting SSL certs.
Clearly it's not a good idea to rely on this for anything serious so the value is mainly convenience during prototyping.
