It's cognitive dissidents. We all know this is happening to every aspect of our enviornment and that we as humans are behind it. But of course we're not going to give up our material world, and we'll continue to disbelieve only because it threatens our very nature of the animal that minipulates materials. The planet isn't doomed, we are. We're creating conditions that are feeding back on us in a negitive way. We will be our own distruction; probably be creating a nice warm enviornment for some disease to mutate and run rampant, where the only humans left will be some isolated populations of humans. To Moburg in Hunter S. Thompson's "Rum Diaries, "The only animals to claim a god, yet behave the least lile they have one."

Fairly morose even for internet standards. The Earth is plenty capable of plunging into an ice age without human intervention. Also no matter what an asteroid is eventually going to destroy the earth or it will get swallowed up by some exploding star.

Those facts still should paralyze you. We are all plenty capable of improving the lives of ourselves and others today. What’s stopping you?

Isn't that whataboutism?

None of those things are relevant for you and your children and grandchildren. But global climate change and ecological collapse almost certainly will be.

WOW!

This sounds like the same old argument, blaming someone's stupidity on outside forces. Not everyone is born smart. You want diversity? Well it doesn't only come in color; it comes in intelligence as well as other aspects. Swaying peoples options is by no means new or born of the digital age, and when it deals with politics, guess what, it's call propagandaBut the research is limited and in its infancy. The artical says, "Despite this, we are well aware that understanding and manipulating human behavior has been a motivation of recent events targeting political elections through social media". In the 19-teens and 1920s, we had the Creel Commition, the U.S.'s first real propaganda machine. Noam Chompski as well as other have writen om the subject. Hell, there's even a section in Machiavelli's "The Prince" on the subject. The stupid will always exist to do stupid things and as the population grows the proportion of stupid grows and the more we make that the subject of our news the more noticable stipid will be.

Are kids born to spies spies themselves? Is ideology genetic? I know one thing, they'll live a lifetime of surveillance if they stay, and how will society treat them knowing their background?

That's not the governments argument. Canada does not grant citizenship to children born to foreign diplomats working in Canada. The argument is that since spies are working for a foreign government, their children also do not qualify for citizenship.

That's a very clear, easy to understand rule. It makes perfect sense. The only question is if a rule that applies to foreign diplomats can also apply to spies.

Anything that applies to diplomats (who are welcome guests) should apply more strictly and harshly to spies (who are enemies), I would think.

Yes, but it's overly simplistic. It's not the fault of the kids that their parents were engage din deception, and now that the kids have (partially) grown up in the sincere belief that they are Canadian they have a separate interest from that of their parents. In a tricky cas like this you could rule with the proviso that they won't be able to enjoy the normal benefits that would accrue to the parents of citizens, like any preferential immigration or visa rights.

I'd presume if they know you're a spy then you're failing at spying, right? But if you don't already know that they know (otherwise you probably wouldn't stick around?) then your poor kid now has no idea if he's a citizen or not. So this would mean that you could have a kid that grows up thinking he's a citizen, and being treated as he is, but who suddenly finds out he's not. That would suck for the kid. Do they imagine that will work out somehow?

The kid does have citizenship... of the parents country. The brothers in the article are Russian citizens.

The parents knew 100% who they were working for. Maybe they shouldn't lie to their children?

It's sort of like Madoff stealing billions and his children growing up thinking they were rich.. and then one day, the government comes and takes all the money away and imprisons the thief. And then someone asks, but shouldn't these children still be rich? Why should they live in poverty when they grew up their entire lives thinking they were billionaires?

Sorry, if you're inflicting problems on the kids then blaming the parents isn't a valid defense. It's distinctly different from a property interest.

Lets say a child born to spies grows up for 20 years in Canada, as a Canadian and has nothing to do with his/her parents spying activities. If suddenly one day they lose their citizenship, what are they supposed to do? Where are they supposed to go? Canada is the only homeland they've known. How does them getting punished for their parents' sins makes any sense?

> Where are they supposed to go?

One idea: to report themselves to the appropriate intelligence bureau of their home country with documents about their parentage. They can get their appropriate citizenship there and then apply for permanent residency in Canada.

A special immigration class could be created for their particular circumstance (they are not "skilled worker" or "family class" or any of that sort of thing), but in other regards they have to join the same immigration queue as everyone else.

Of course, if they have any serious criminal record or anything in Canada, they can forget about it.

Why would they live a lifetime of surveillance and mistreatment by society?
