If someone uses wine, would you be so kind to post here for what programs?
Wine would be interesting for Photoshop due to the GIMP CMYK problems. I run Photoshop on Wine many years ago. I just needed it recently and did not get it to work. I had to use a Virtual Machine.
The Steam Deck uses a Wine-derived library to run Windows games almost perfectly. It’s honestly the best use of Wine I’ve seen, and it’s arguably finally taken the concept of Windows on Linux mainstream.
From what I remember of using Odin a decade ago.. it doesn't actually 'flash' the device, it copies the binary blobs to the bootloader partition and tells the device to flash itself from them, then reboots the device. So it should be relatively safe under wine, it'll either work, or it won't.
I've used many times for small programs and such, even though I don't use any wine program on a regular basis.
However, I do play games on Proton all the time and everything mostly just works.
PDF-XChange Editor[1] is a very good PDF viewer and annotator. Unfortunately, no Linux equivalent comes close, IMHO. Fortunately, it runs very well on Wine[2].
My experince: 15 years ago (on 32 bit x86 linux) it run most of the windows programs fine (office, age of empires, photoshop).
1 year ago: installed on a x86_64 linux, will not run x86 32 bit windows programs wuthout 32 linux libraries. On x86 linux with 32bit programs it will need additional programs from Microsoft (msvc runtime ?) to be able to run some program (total commander ?). I just gave up.
If you are running 64 bit Linux, then unfortunately you will need to install 32 bit Linux libs to run 32 bit Windows software, but normally that's pretty straightforward.
I prefer Word 2003 or failing that Word 97, which is the oldest, smallest, fastest version that handles the same file formats used everywhere until MS invented its compressed-XML nonsense.
Word '03 started working around WINE 8 or so. Before that, I had to use Crossover for it.
Could you please elaborate?
I had infomaniak email with external (non infomaniak) domain. They don't seem to offer plain email hosting anymore. Please advise.
Agreed. A plain number as an answer could give you zero points. It is always UNITS UNITS UNITS. 10 what? Kg? Apples? kW?
I remember actually a chemistry test where I did not use units in an important calculation but only in the answer. If I had used units I would have realized that I totally fucked up. I went belly up. :-(
Dimensional analysis was part of my degree but honestly, I remember little.
I had a high school physics teacher who would have the instructions "Answer in SI units unless specified" at the top of his exams, but there was always a last bonus problem that referenced the previous answer and promised extra credit equal to a full problem for the answer in "most creative or interesting units (with work shown)". It was a competition in the class for the extra credit and he'd typically award 1-3 of the answers full extra credit.
I will re-post later. Please understand that I am still very confused and that I want to keep many things private. And while I understand your curiosity, this is not an AMA.
No, not China. I was imprisoned in a western EU country. The things that happened I had considered impossible in a rule of law country. I am a dual citizen, otherwise it would have been impossible to arrest me. I have family here and I am still in this country. Not in the same federal state but still in the same country. When I was released out of the blue I felt like leaving immediately but after some hours decided to travel to my family. I have 2k USD in cash with me. So no worries. I have a place to sleep for a few days and money. I expect to have a EU CC working within 1 or 2 days. I will fly to the US in 1 month, maybe two. Don't know yet. Everything is difficult. I had a fiancee before I got arrested etc.
I wasn't asking out of curiosity. It's hard to give you advice on some of those topics without knowing what country's laws you're currently governed by and what financial systems you have access to. Totally understand your desire to keep that information private for now though.
You probably want to contact Google support and try to recover your account as soon as possible, because once you leave the country you're going to have an extra fraud-hoop to jump through if you try to regain access from a country other than the one that the account was primarily used from. Google is pretty notorious for locking people out of their accounts and being useless about recovering them, so you want as few red flags as possible.
Sorry this happened to you. It sounds terrible and I wish you the best.
Well, we all know these houses a in bad shape and require a major investment but I don't think this is a problem.
Fact is, you will create a tax liability there since most of this programs don't only require you to renovate the house, they also expect you to move there. . As much as I love Italy, I would not take the house with 50k USD on top of it for free.
Don't worry. Other countries will follow soon as online work becomes more available and the societies overage more. For some countries a collapse may be unavoidable. Crazy real estate prices? No retirement for you but please pay the retirement for the boomers? Sky high taxes? Good luck!
Hadn't heard of this one, so looked it up, and all I can say is... Not again. GNOME, KDE, Enlightenment - is it the fate of every DE to make a release so bad that a chunk of the users fork an old version and run with it?
This "old version" is alive and well and has been since many many years. It is my daily driver on my laptop and my desktop. It is extremely lightweight, snappy and beautiful.
There is talk of switching to a newer version of Enlightenment since it is getting more stable again.
