What about the benefits/drawbacks of the graphql client in a web app, e.g. Apollo [1], Relay [2]? You get a client-side normalized cache of all data fetched by any query. Here's a handful of benefits:

- If data already exists in cache, a query will return that data instead of making a network request.

- Everything that has a data dependency on something in the cache will automatically update when the data is updated, e.g. after a mutation.

- Cache data can be optimistically updated before the request completes, UI that queries this data will automatically update.

- Components will automatically refetch data if they need to, e.g. if an object is partially updated.

The pain points are pretty painful though:

- Really hard to debug unexpected refetches.

- Normalizing the data for the cache comes at a cost, it can be pretty slow for big responses.

- You quickly realise you need to really understand how the client works under the hood to be productive with debugging/complex behaviour.

I see it as a case of "this is the worst API/client, except for all the others". I'm curious to hear how people using non-graphql APIs are managing data in the client in web-apps with complex data needs?

To me, the best feature is Relay Fragments (I think Apollo has fragments too?), as each component describes the data they need: no need to do a big top-level request then pass down the data to the responsible components, everything is in one file.

It makes UI changes much much easier to deal with.


I'm a huge fan of this. Apollo doesn't have it baked in as a pattern like Relay does afaik, but I do something similar manually in Apollo, inspired by Relay.

Deleting code automatically removes its data dependencies from the root query, it's ideal.


I mean technically in relay you need a parent component to make the query for the child components, and pass a reference to those children. There's still a parent/child relationship that needs to be maintained.


TanStack Query (fka React Query) is a REST client similar to Apollo Client, with many of the same pros and cons: https://tanstack.com/query/latest/docs/framework/react/overv...


Except it only has a query-based cache, rather than a normalized cache by type name and ID. This means a deeply nested component running a mutation to update an entity can’t update the state of a component a few levels up purely with the response to that mutation, it instead needs to invalidate the cache and cause the parent to requery, much less performant.


We use https://tanstack.com/query/v3 + openapi-based auto-generated SDK.

I would say the DX is pretty much comparable to using Apollo Client.

TanStack Query isn't a REST client. It's a generic data fetching framework.

You could use TanStack query with GraphQL, Apollo, REST, or any other data source.

I use Express for my web server and OpenAPI for the schema, which works like a charm.

I quite like Relay's pattern where components define their data requirements, and this is passed up the component tree to some query at the root. Avoids a situation where the query defined at the root asks for unnecessary fields because it's so far away from where the data is actually required.

The desktop-switching animation is too slow on new Macbook pros with "promotion" (high refresh rate) enabled. The animation speed is tied to the display refresh rate, so disabling promotion (setting refresh rate to 60hz) fixes the issue.

It's particular annoying because windows aren't interactable during the animation, so you have to wait for the ease-out to fully complete before you can click on things in the new desktop. This has been known to Apple for over a year.


I've had that complaints for four years when I had to use macos to develop for an iPad. As a Windows(or Plasma) user its window manager is just absurdly behind the times with its exclusive full screen and lack of snapping or having to edit application manifests so you can put the simulator in a tiled setup. It really didn't give me a good impression on why people like macos for development apart from having a shell with outdated utilities. It also doesn't respect the reduced motion accessibility preference to the same degree that windows does, it's how I get around annoyingly long animations on there.


To be fair, in the early days of Mac OS X the shell used to be much more up to date and hacking things around was much easier because they didn't yet put all those "security" features all other the place.

The folder layout of the system was also much cleaner and logical but now it feels like windows where data may be hidden in many layers of randomly named subfolders.

As for the hardware, the early intel MacBook Pros were extremely good for repairability and longevity. They lost some of it with the switch to "unibody" but it still was rather decent with most things accessible and replaceable (battery, ram, storage).

I think it is largely understated how much things went downhill after Tim Cook took over because people are blinded by financial success. Steve Jobs had learned some hard lessons before coming back to Apple and applied them with a lot of success, it seems all of this went out of the window and now it's all about making shiny hardware that has to be replaced on schedule preferably.

They say power corrupt but money has seems to have that characteristic, but then again, money is some form of power.

I initially made this to experiment with 'faking' depth of field in CSS (check out my penultimate tweet for the demo vid and inspiration from shuding_, link at the bottom of the site).

But last night I remembered that ThreeJS exists, so rewrote it using react-three-fiber. This was my first time playing around with it and I'm super impressed, it's incredibly ergonomic.

Confirming undocumented feature. Scratching my head why ctrl-left-click on macOS doesn't enable panning, too.


Right-click to pan is how a lot of video games do it, if not left-click drags. Needing to also use a keyboard key at the same time wouldn't very ergonomic.

Agreed. But maybe better awkward than non-existent? Otherwise, users with no right-click can’t pan.

This is a great application of AI summarization. You can focus more on the candidate when you're not writing things down in the interview. Also, as a candidate, noticing your interviewer typing/writing is also pretty offputting.

The next-level thing would be having a way to tailor the generated summary to your particular notes style/format.


As an interviewee you can use the interviewer's typing as a good signal. When I'm conducting an LP interview and you go off on a tangent that I'm not interested in, I'll stop typing and look up long before I'm likely to interrupt you.

Now I'm not _expecting_ anyone to pick up on that. My point is it's a useful skill to engage (even via zoom) with the other person and develop a feel for how they're processing the info you're giving them. Otherwise the interviewee could just talk to a transcription AI in the first place and the hiring team reads the summary (shudders).

Though now I've said that, someone is probably going to build this nightmare version.


Expecting an interviewee to pick up on that and manage the conversation is completely unrealistic, and it’s unfair to put that on them—if you’re not interested in the direction they took the question, have the guts to say so and redirect them.

Really? For me it shows they are doing their work properly instead of just depending on their memory.


I'm more thinking about interviewers that seem to be continuously typing while I'm talking without following up on things I've said. Perhaps with a summary feature like this they could be more present, and make the interview feel more like a conversation than a verbal form.


Ah I see your point. I just pause when they start typing and let them finish. I consider it a polite indication that I let them finish storing what I said in longer-term memory and that at the same time I would prefer they focus on what I say.


I've found it quite off-putting. I tend to pause when someone is typing furiously, so they have time to catch up. But then this can disrupt the flow of conversation and is a bit awkward


As long as they type quietly I'm all good. It's the loud typers that get me >:(


My best practice is to say “Hey, I’m going to be typing notes during this interview so that I don’t misrepresent you in the debrief. I’m not doing email on the side or anything!”

An next iteration where I could get the AI output in exactly the format I write my scorecards in would be fantastic. It'd save me so much time, especially on days with multiple back-to-back interviews


Keeping your passwords on your device (and also in Gmail?) might work for you, but a password store that I can't conveniently access from both my computer and phone isn't useful to me, and I suspect, many others.
