There are some MMORPGs out there that have attempted to innovate by introducing elements from other genres. Some names off the top of my head, Starbreak, Steambirds alliance, Blade & Soul.

Also, maybe those .io games, where you can just pick up and play have gotten the attention of the younger generation? Especially since they are easier to access and dont require downloading of a client nor signing up for an account
