I find this usage of AI absolutely brilliant (and ethical): No editorial change or loss of information compared to human reporters, and it vastly improves the accessibility of the information. I think the "voice acting" alone is worth it if you find the visualization off-putting.

as someone who loved maths first but then do programming for a living, it's because solving puzzles is fun. I get the same dopamine hit whether it's a math problem, a coding task, or a video game level. but I think forcing yourself to like something is not the correct approach; you either like it naturally or you tolerate it for some other goals

genuine question; why would you do that lol? phones easily get full day battery nowadays, and flagships get 2 day battery if your usage is anything but insane

The only way any phone gets more than 1 day of battery is when you don't use it. In which case, why you care that if it's 120 or 60hz.

I'm back to iPhone now tho, so I get a full-day-ish with pro-motion under a normal usage.

i find its biggest problem is its json ecosystem; very clunky and boilerplate-y

I'm not sure if you've noticed, but China make high tech products all the time. ok not semiconductors, but cars, trains, clothings, medicines etc... even social media. maybe they steal some of it, but everything?

the Air doesn't have ProMotion right? that feature is non-negotiable on any display for me nowadays

For me faster refresh rate is noticeable on phone or ipad where you scroll all the time. On a laptop you don't have that much smooth scrolling. For me it's a non issue on laptop, not even once I wished it had faster refresh. While I always notice when switching between Pro and non Pro iPad.

I have ProMotion on my MBP and iPhone but… it’s ok? Honestly, I use an older computer or iPhone temporarily and don’t notice a difference.

I’m looking forward to the day I notice the difference so I can appreciate what I have.

I find 60Hz on the non-Pro iPhone obnoxious since switching to 120Hz screens. On the other hand, I do not care much about 60Hz when it comes to computer screens. I think touch interfaces make low refresh rates much more noticeable.

I wonder. Do you do a lot of doom scrolling?

I can’t understand the people who notice the 120 hz adaptive refresh whatever and one guess is their use is a lot twitchier than mine.

No doomscrolling at all. Even when switching between home screens is like it's dropping frames left and right (it's not of course, but that's what it looks like coming from 120Hz). A Galaxy A54 that we still have in the house that was just over 300 Euro feels much smoother than my old iPhone 15 that cost close to 1000 Euro because it has a 120Hz screen.

Even 90Hz (like on some Pixels) is substantially better than the iPhone's 60Hz.

The Galaxy must be new. In my experience Android phones get extremely laggy [1] as they get old and the 120 Hz refresh won't save you :)

I just noticed that I don't really try to follow the screen when I scroll down HN, for example. Yes it's blurry but I seem not to care.

[1] Source: my Galaxy something phone that I keep on my desk for when I do Android development. It has no personal stuff on it, it's only used to test apps that I work on, and even that isn't my main job (nothing since early spring this year for example). It was very smooth when I bought it, now it takes 5+ seconds to start any application on it and they stutter.

I'm tempted to try this in my SvelteKit app. What do I lose compared to a React user?

Bigger ecosystem for react. Svelte is easier to develop in rapidly.

I can make things much faster in Svelte, epsecially since Svelte is less complex than React. With AI code generators, I don't really even have to think, just tell it what I want.

Of note, my main career isn't programming.

haha is Chinese, so also a "loan" word

The literary character 母 is Chinese, spoken word はは is not, and some believe old pronunciation was closer to papa.

Bonus: ちち covers both titty and daddy. Food for thought. And babies too, I guess.

Wiktionary seems to disagree, saying it’s a Japanese origin word. https://ja.m.wiktionary.org/wiki/はは

At least in modern mandarin mom is “ma”, but Chinese has so many dialects …

how would you do that? once you board people on you can't kick them out; and who would you kick? the fattest ones? also, they need to rebalance with fuel if the plane is overweight. you can't do that with people on board. not to mention finding a scale able to handle a few tons...

SC requires a critical temperature, so the "cooling" part leading to the "producing" part is correct

Is the producing part correct? My understanding is that once cooled they reject magnetic fields, not produce them. According to wikipedia:

"The Meissner effect (or Meißner–Ochsenfeld effect) is the expulsion of a magnetic field from a superconductor during its transition to the superconducting state when it is cooled below the critical temperature. This expulsion will repel a nearby magnet."
