I'm a competent C and C++ programmer. The C++ spec weighs a lot, so I'm hesitant to call myself an expert, but I have a good working knowledge of the languages. For a previous employer I worked on a commercial Windows IDE. My most recent project has been a WebGL architecture visualization tool for a real-estate company.

I've been working on the foundations of a 3D game engine for ~5 years, which has taught me a great deal about C, systems, and graphics programming on Windows and Linux. I chose to build it without third-party libraries, which began as a learning exercise, and ended up teaching me the value of simplicity.

As for hard technical skills, I've been practicing web development most of my career, so I'm familiar with many of the popular (and some of the less popular) frameworks and paradigms that have come and gone in the last decade. I can configure and maintain webservers, proxies and load balancers. I have a good understanding of the Linux network stack; I've worked on custom TCP & UDP protocols in the past. I have reasonably good linear algebra and some calculus chops from writing a 3D renderer from scratch.

Open to contract work, but would prefer permanent FT. I'm looking to join a company working on hard technical problems. Some topics that interest me include graphics, genetics, compilers, operating systems, compression, robotics and computer vision.

Outside of work I enjoy backcountry skiing, snowmobiling, rock-climbing, hiking and biking! I live in a small town called Revelstoke, British Columbia, Canada and would strongly prefer to work remotely. I've been working remotely for many years and I love it!

If you think I could be a good fit for your team and would like to chat I can be contacted by email at jesse.hughes.it@gmail.com

Hello, Jesse here.

I'm looking to work on a team of highly motivated individuals doing innovative and, more importantly, meaningful work. Areas that sound interesting to me are graphics, computer vision, computational geometry, compiler development and genetics/genomics to name a few.

I have experience (10 years) building CRUD APIs for the web in all manner of interpreted languages and frameworks.

I've worked on multiple compilers both for fun and profit, a 3D game engine, memory allocators, parsers, a C++ Windows IDE, IBM mainframes running RPG (.. apparently people still use these ..), both binary and text-based network protocols, lots of CRUD applications both frontend & backend, setup web servers from scratch many times, written C++ node modules .. you get the idea. I'm comfortable writing and deploying code to pretty much anywhere.

I have a diverse skillset that could be valuable to your company if you're looking for someone with a well rounded knowledge of CS, coupled with good understanding of how to write well-working software. I consider myself to be a craftsman, and firmly believe in shipping high quality software. I feel the quality of most software today is _far_ lower than it could be, and make a conscious effort to set a high bar in terms of quality for myself and, to the best of my ability, encourage those around me to do the same.

If you think we could do good work together, please contact me at my email address listed above.

Cheers, Jesse.

My friend met the guy that organized this conference .. she said it was a real treat.

This doesn't prove he actually believes in it, even the attendees could be said to have only attended for the spectacle.

I've been working on the foundations of a 3D game engine for ~3 years, which has taught me a great deal about C, systems and graphics programming on both Win32 and Linux. I chose to build it without libraries (Handmade Hero style) which began as a learning exercise, but ended up teaching me to value simplicity much more than I expected.

I can configure and maintain webservers, proxies and load balancers having worked with the web for 10 years.

I have a good understanding of the Linux network stack and APIs at the systems level - I've worked on several custom TCP + UDP protocols in the past.

I love building tools. Sometimes I feel like I was made to build tools. I build all kinds of tools - tools for computers, tools for automotive maintenance, tools for making tools. I've been building a game engine, which I would consider a collection of tools, for years and I still enjoy working on it.

Lastly, and I think this is interrelated with the tools thing, I'm a systems programmer at heart. I love having direct access to the chip and needing to understand the hardware architecture, as opposed to the internals of an interpreter, to write well-working and well-performing code.

That's the cliff-notes on my technical background. As a person I'm friendly and easy to get along with. I like the phrase "Have strong opinions, weakly held".

I enjoy backcountry skiing, snowmobiling, rock-climbing, hiking, biking and beer! I live in a small town called Nelson in British Columbia, Canada and would strongly prefer to work remotely. I've been working remotely for several years for companies in the SF bay area and love it!
