If anyone is wondering "what is a wikipedia?" - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia

For those lost by the parent comment: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wonder_(emotion)

I feel this is a rare, crisp, 10/10 hn comment.

Thank you everyone in this subthread for providing a much needed chuckle in this difficult time.

I feel like this quote needs a qualification. You can still fear what someone might say without fearing they are correct.

This is exactly what the quote is saying. You are adding on your own layer of bias by assuming he’s incorrect.

I don't agree; pointing out the words are lies certainly turns the quote on its head for me.

If we count a permanently inflamed organic blob in roughly the shape of a mouse covered by surgical scars constantly pumped with anti-rejection drugs and hooked up to a blood filter we could probably make the mouse immortal now. It might not enjoy living though.

Funnily enough, chronic inflammation (inflammaging) is also a hallmark of aging.

I mean, that’s a good start honestly. Makes me optimistic about the QoL the mouse might be able to have in 50 years.

> or have social media and credit card companies convinced non-elites that they should spring for ad-hoc entry into a lounge with money they don’t have?

This is something I've detected too. If I can naturally and appropriately afford a bit of luxury that offers value I don't mind, but if I'm reaching for no reason other than to feel "better" than my current status allows because other people are doing it too I shy away from that. It's just a ploy to take money from me.

> It’s not much different than people paying for 20 minutes on fake jet to make videos for instagram or TikTok

Ehh, this is more of a business expense for them I think.

I'm sorry but I've got two EVs and I'm not seeing anything like what you're reporting. On my first set of tires for a model S I got 60k miles which is longer than I usually like to run tires but they were still in good shape. My driving pattern is about 80% grandpa-mode and 20% speeding to loud music.

I assure you. If your EV tires are only lasting 10K miles you have one of the following cases:

- You are driving VERY aggressively

- Your car has an alignment issue or some sort of torque vectoring problem

- Your tires are absolute shit

He (like me) is in the UK - unless you go for a brand name, many of the tyres people run here are low quality import tyres - while 10k is low, my ICE has occasionally only got 20k from a set, but that is mainly due to the tyres cracking from sun damage (still got over 4 year out of them before that happened).

Cheap tyres are often a bad investment, but I drive country lanes with a higher risk of punctures and I was burning through brand name tyres, a full set is worth more than my car!

Mine lasted 11k km before I was seeing interleave.

Alignment is fine, had it checked when I had a new set of continentals fitted.

My problem is purely that I drive like an asshole, on very windy, empty roads. Every day is track day.

Decent tyres, too, continentals - soft compound, hard roads. Means it corners like a dream right up until the tyres are bald.

Yeah and it's essentially lacking a red

I thought the colors on the linked 'National Grid: Live' page looked pretty good, but they don't match the palette. For instance, the red used is #c45.

> Having no gun violence and having a higher life expectancy than America is not something to be proud of and not a useful benchmark

/s ?

What I mean by this is - is that this is such a low bar - of not having rampant gun violence and short life expectancy, especially when correlating them with GDP. This should not be a point of pride or comparison to beat this bar. Most developed countries in the world achieve more than America on these metrics, therefore it's a useless benchmark.

if America has gun violence, then Germany has car ramming into crowds violence, and both problems have similar roots

Why would you expect anyone to be interested in this solution given the whole discussion is about self-hosting?

A lot of comments describe trying to build something better and abandoning the problem. (Including my own) It is nice to hear the different issues, use cases, requirements and workarounds.

To be fair, self-hosting is often over-rated and mentioning that is part of the discussion.

I feel like I have better focus and mood when I have SomaFM's Drone Zone on in the background

This stuff literally works.

I know someone personally that while at a kid's soccer game said to me:

"Hey did you see that new engine Elon made? It runs on water and he's going to be putting it in all of his cars! He's also trying to mine H3 from the moon!"

Because I'm friends with this person and I like them I try to play dumb as to not be insulting and ask them to pull it up and show me. Once he does I say "oh that looks like it's AI generated" and he sort of agrees.

I don't think this person has a low IQ or anything, but I do consider them sort of ignorant (but not typical racist Trump supporter ignorant), just low-information.

We need to try to politely call this stuff out when our friends and family are being tricked because it is doing them (and us) real harm.

Real friends tell friends they are being stupid when they are being stupid.

I agree. But it's a friend through preschool and we're not super close yet.
