what does turbo even mean in the context of an electric car? not sure how you could have forced induction or why porsche would name it that

> what does turbo even mean in the context of an electric car?

It means marketing is now the boss of the company and engineers have no say.

when traveling for work why does the cleaning fee factor in, or is it just the chores does your work not book your travel? or do they give you a flat fee and tell you to find your own accommodations and any money extra/left over is your own deal?

I travel 300+ days a year for work. I book my own place to stay using my company credit card.

Never really tested the upper bound of what I’m allowed to pay per night, but I do live comfortably. The megacorp I work for has a booking system we’re supposed to use, but I’ve never used it. I figured if I bend the rules to everyone’s advantage, no one will complain.

Generally I use booking.com(for those sweet sweet miles & more points) or call the establishment directly to get the best possible price.

I live in NW DC now and spent several years on the MD side about 500m from the DC border. I love it here. I am absolutely uninterested in politics and have no desire to work in defense and there is still so much to do around here, both recreation and career wise.

Another comment was suggesting not moving into DC proper an I highly disagree. being close proximity to the metro line is what enables alot of the fun parts of living in the city. also taxes are less than maryland, but higher than virginia.

job wise, there are a handful of startups as well as tons of local companies (cap 1, appian), as well as branches of larger companies (google, microsoft, amazon, every consulting company you can think of) with offices in and around DC. with the advent of remote work I think the case for moving to dc is even stronger because even if companies are located in northern virginia, you dont have to slog through some of the worst traffic in the country and can just go in occasionally - which is what i do and honestly love it.

I wish i knew more start ups but when i was job searching recently i was looking at remote roles and most of the startups i looked at were non local. also, because of the high concentration of tech jobs, there are a few local recruiting companies that know the area really well and have placed me in 2 of my last 3 jobs.

let me know if you have more questions!

> taxes are less than both virginia and maryland

Can you elaborate? "Taxes" can mean many different things and, for my situation, income taxes in Virginia are far lower than in the other two municipalities.

my mistake. i thought virginia also had local county income tax. in that case virginia is lower and ill update my post.

maryland has local county tax which for montgomery county adds up with the state income tax to be several thousand higher per year than DC, for me.

Interesting, I didn’t know that about MoCo. DC’s income taxes are quite high, but property taxes are comparatively very low.

i live in DC and their HQ2 in arlington VA dominates my linkedin suggested roles. they still have hundreds or even thousands of unfilled roles. i remember hearing originally they were hiring like 5000 engineers across both HQs.

surprising that they would straight up freeze hiring, unless this is maybe just freezing of junior roles or something. I want to see more details about this

Could also be a way of making managers take mentoring and development more seriously. Va current rank and yank/pipping

i work remote but live in the northern dc area. i occasionally have to head up to the harpers ferry area after work (northwest of DC by about 60-70 min without traffic, for non locals) and the afternoon rush hour literally starts by 3pm, especially on thursdays the days i usually have to go up there.

its funny cuz so many people think "oh ill leave early and beat traffic" that you are often better off waiting until like 6pm.

i still cant believe how many WV plates i see on 270 on any given work day. i hope i never end up in a commute like that

i've been driving manual for the last seven years pretty much exclusively and i used to think that, but ive certainly found myself in all sorts of unsafe driving predicaments where i end up revving out the car, shifting with my left hand, shifting with food in my hand, etc.

In the last few years ive made a point to reduce distractions while driving and no longer do this stuff, but the point being, once you get used to manual - you find a way to be dangerous driving it haha

I agree with this. The brain is very good at getting comfortable with something, automating it, and pushing attention to other more novel things

Still less dangerous than automatic. Automatic is easier to cause panic acceleration since they don't need to manage clutch and transmission (almost).

Not a deal breaker for automatic though. Calmer driving, better experience and safety driving can prevent it.

I really like how manuals often require less brake action by the driver. They normally just decelerate on their own or with a downshift

normal cycling shoes have a cleat you lock into the pedal with that allow very little movement. sometimes just a few mm of position change is all it takes to relieve a nagging ache and im guessing he found it easier to get comfortable with a shoe he can move around on the pedal.

I've stopped mid ride to adjust my cleats just a smidge when i was feeling discomfort. you don't want to mess around with knee pain especially when riding 12 hours a day

I suspect you're exactly right. I actually wish he would've said why the sandals specifically helped him because my immediate reaction was also, "what?"

Here's the article about it that has a picture of his sandal setup: https://cyclingtips.com/2021/06/lachlan-morton-just-rode-two...

In an interview with Sporza he said on day 1 he had knee issues because his cleat slipped. On day 2 he rode through the pain. On day 3 he wore sandals on his trip to a shop and noticed his knee didn’t hurt. So he bought flat pedals and continued on those using the sandals.

He also said the shop did not let him buy only the pedals so he bought the whole bike just for the pedals.

I have a pair of these SPD/flat pedals on my cross bike (it’s a light cross so I use it on road and even to commute if I need). Nice to be able to switch based on the ride.

On my mountain bike I clip in but use a shimano saints pedal that has a wide base so you can distribute weight off the clip a bit.

considering zwift has over 2.5 million users, and a billion dollar valuation, I think the market is larger than you think. I personally know dozens of people who use zwift nearly everyday (although my friend groups skews heavily towards cyclists/fitness enthusiasts)

Just googled it, found the following quote:

"We're not [publishing MAU numbers], but I can tell you a couple of tidbits. We've had over 3 million accounts created on the platform. We recently peaked around, I think 45,000 simultaneous users, but hundreds of thousands of customers are using Zwift on a daily basis."

So they definitely don't have 2.5 million users. Maybe they'll get there though!

If we want to compare market caps, Peloton has a 35 billion market cap to zwift's 1 billion. Also, to counter your anecdata, I live in Texas and no zero people that use zwift, but many that use a peloton.

>"I live in Texas and no zero people that use zwift"

This is simply not true. Perhaps you do not know those people but there are plenty of Texans using Zwift.

As for market cap - I own and use many old things. As long as they work why would I give a flying fuck about market cap of the companies that had made those. They might not even be (like my treadmill) in business anymore.

cool anecdote about the team sessions. I have done a few team races and they are a ton of fun with friends. my one gripe with sessions is that its very... permanent. like if you join with the wrong car or wrong team, you cant back out and change it. any idea why it was implemented like that?

I am horrible at iracing, likely because I never practice and just decide to hop into a race occasionally, but it is a good way to spend the offseason when we cant go irl racing

The teams thing is interesting. It bit me a few months ago because a teammate accidentally registered for a race with the wrong car. He couldn't back out or join the race with the new team the rest of us registered with because he was already in a team.

I'm not sure why it's implemented this way, but given the issues with registration/session creation for the Daytona 24 hour this year I'd guess the team event registration is write only and doesn't permit updates in order to simplify the session creation logic.

The only issue with F1 in iracing is that its almost too realistic. unless you spend hours tweaking the setup and really know what you are doing, the car will be difficult to drive and significantly slower than anyone else in the F1 leagues, who have spend that time fine tuning their setups.

Oh yea and they are still difficult to drive even with a good setup. 1000 HP rear wheel drive monsters...
