In the same way I don't trust Google not to cancel whatever it is they just announced, I don't trust apple to keep supporting software on platforms that aren't theirs. They just don't have a good track record and no real incentives. The last widespread Apple sosftware on non-Apple platforms was probably iTunes, which was terrible.
Apple's recent track record (Apple Music, Apple TV) is surprisingly good. The apps on Windows and Xbox have been trending better/gaining features at a good pace with respect to Mac OS and iOS.
There is a sense that Swift has opened up cross-platform app initiatives at Apple that they wouldn't have done just a few years back.
I do trust Google not to cancel one of their core (or most popular) products, like search, Maps, Docs, Android, etc. Anything else I don't. I do use Google Photos, but I wouldn't be too surprised to see them shut it down one day.
Well, the Passwords app is just the Passwords section in Settings moved out into its own app. It already exists on Windows, too, but maybe they are updating it to allow autofill without using a Chrome extension or add other features. It isn't the biggest change, just bringing attention to an existing feature that already competes with 1Password et al.
I switched to Apple Passwords and have been using the official Chrome extension for a few months. It's not as seamless as some of the password manager extensions, but has been working well enough.
The engineers at Apple aren’t somehow imbued with any sort of special intellect that the engineers at Meta lack to do the same thing. And to be clear here, I’m no fan of Meta. But, in echoing @laserlight here, let’s not pretend that the engineers at Meta are any less capable than the engineers at Apple. There are plenty of brilliant engineers in both companies.
Why does the US still not have universal healthcare? Europe/China aren't somehow smarter or "health geniuses" - they just put in the effort and made it a priority to provide a well-functioning service.
Its tsmcs chip not apples though, anyone can up and order something of those sort of specs from them and meta has plenty of money to wave around at a crowded bar for attention.
TSMC is a fab, not a chip designer. Apple designed their own chips with in-house engineering talent. Due to how the silicon supply chain works no-one but TSMC can make those chips so everyone needs to use them. Also Meta can't just waive around money and get the most advanced chips; apple has bought out all the production for some time.
You really think if it was that easy to compete with Apple's SoCs, Google wouldn't have done it long ago for the Pixels? Or someone in the Android space would step in to compete with Qualcomm's Snapdragon chips? Samsung hasn't been able to do it for years with their Exynos line.
It's unfortunately far, far more true than whatever lead Meta still has over Apple on the VR headset side.
Also it's not just the chip itself, but moreso the whole hardware-sofrware vertical integration. Despite being a decade-long Apple-hater, ever since I got an M2 max macbook from work I simply have never touched my Windows/Linux Thinkpads again. The difference in user experience isn't even on a generational level, but more of a I-can't-imagine-how-Apple's-competitors-can-begin-to-close-this-gap level. Sadly I think all this talk of Quest-vs-AVP war is just an illusion, the outcome is very much preordained at this point.
Did you even read the article? This has nothing to do with charging infrastructure. The vehicle itself had a fault. He also didn’t buy the vehicle, he was reviewing it.
The endless series of failures by legacy auto keeps convincing me that they are doomed to lose most of their market share. Because they are incompetent and not trying to build evs with all their might - they don't recognize them as the existential threat they are to ICE manufacturers.
First tesla is taking their market share, even tiny new startups like rivian are outselling many major automakers in the us. US EV sales are up 50% plus year over year. Max ICE auto sales were in 2017! No one seems to have noticed where the growth went. 1 million ev sales this year.
But the second wave is just starting, which is cheap and quite capable chinese EVs. They are starting to take the growth from Tesla in China, Tesla is having to work hard there. The 1-2 punch of first Tesla and then China will degrade us auto.
I'm sure GM's lobbyists will keep Chinese EVs out of the US market with steep tariffs. I'm amazed they didn't succeed at locking Toyota out in the '80s.
There's a 25% tariff on Chinese Autos right now. The volvo ex30 is actually made in China (Volvo was bought by Geely). But the ex30 is highly reviewed in previews, coming out for $35k after the tarriff in 2wd model. This compact suv apparently has great quickness and is a fine car. It's the harbinger of doom.
I'm sure the us will pass more protectionist legislation, in Europe they is at least early talk of blocking Chinese EVs because they can't compete too. Volvo has a plan for a Euro based factory for that reason.
Same. It’s just really disappointing to see how this all played out because of his handling of it. But I agree, I stopped using Reddit and haven’t looked back. I feel better for it.
This and the commercial real estate walk aways are just wild. I never want to hear elites wringing their hands at individuals walking away from bad/upside down mortgages ever again.
That would work. They've been using the i prefix for a while though. I still have fond memories of the first time I saw an i8 in person. It really looked like something from the future.
