She also got millions more votes. That election turned on a few tens of thousands of votes in a couple of states due to the way the electoral college works. Money paid for the targeted ads responsible and built the company that made it possible.

If only she knew that running up the score in California wasn’t as important as securing wins in Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, and Michigan...

She did almost no campaigning in California after the primaries. Mostly all she did in California after that was fund raising.

One of the local coffee shops solves this problem by also being a music school: http://hometownrhythms.com/

They also have regular musical acts. The Athens/metro Atlanta area has a lot of cover bands.

I still see people call policing maps "crime maps" as though you could map out all the crime like in SimCity.

mIRC is still under active development.

I call those people annoying. I was born and raised and have lived my entire life in the US. I'm quiet, still, and prefer the same in the people around me. You can't assess over 300 million people by the few who can afford to travel.

One issue is that we generally notice the loud obnoxious stereotype, and there are enough Americans that fit that mould.

And perhaps you are discounting that many people make their own judgement call based on the interactions they have had with Americans.

I am not sure it has much to do with tourists per se. On the gripping hand, I am in Palma de Mallorca at the moment, which many Europeans travel to for the beach and party life: there are some definite stereotypes for the Poms and the Germans!

Every visitor faces bigotry, some fair, some unfair.

American's can get plenty of positive reaction too. At least most people have some idea about your country and customs from watching movies: try coming from a third world nation...

Gopher and HTTP had a similar situation. Gopher had a lot going for it, but the future licensing situation was unclear. HTTP was free, clear, and widespread by the time Gopher became GPL.

I (and probably the person you replied to) take all these words for granted. It didn't occur to me someone hadn't heard of them.

Check out the thesaurus entry for cantankerous for some more useful, related, and probably less common than I think terms: https://www.thesaurus.com/browse/cantankerous

Thanks!

And I don't wish people to stop using less common words - I do enjoy an expanded vocabulary, just for the record. The comment was just to save others a couple of clicks :).

Conceits creep in if you only read one perspective. Think about all the people who think Western culture is the source of all civilization because they only read things that affirm that view.

Any given culture's canon is big in volume, but small in context.

Still, I imagine it's better to read your culture's canon of thought only than none at all. Obviously you're not going to get a diverse perspective on life that way, but you might get a perspective that isn't totally informed by id or media.

Not only that, but the “Western Canon”, is most certainly not written by one culture.

I used to use one of their weather maps. North Georgia gets a lot of random, unpredictable storms from the gulf. I used one of their maps to see if one of the thousand tiny half mile wide storms would pass over me. If it did, I could be in for a heck of a storm and need to unplug stuff. If not, all that effort would be wasted.

They had a map. It would show you all the little cells that rose to the level of concern along with speed, direction, and predicted location by time. I could match those cells to a violent-looking cloud sliding by in the distance. I could never find that map after the redesign. That was the only reason I went there.

I have to assume all their designers are from places where storm clouds come in big, predictable blobs instead of tiny terrors that miss you 90% of the time.

If you haven't try windy.com. Switched a while back (Central/West Georgia with same micro climate issue south of Carrolton). It works well for me ...phone app on the tractor is handy. They just switched their forecast model, a week ago?, so I don't have experience with the new model.

I thought they only did wind. Thanks.

Check out https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.acmeaom.an... - for me it's a full replacement for wundermap (there's a lot of wundermap stuff that I didn't use though, so ymmv).

I get the impression most stock news is generated, not written. Maybe they use the same software I heard was taking over in sports commentary.
