I'm running matrix with jitsi for voice. No one is gonna leave discord for it though....not yet in my circles at least.

I know of nobody who even knows of Matrix, if I haven't told them beforehand. Discord is so much better than all alternatives, that I just don't see why anyone would leave it.

if people actually cared about freedom/privacy, Discord wouldn't be a thing, right?

and even harder to leave Discord now when a lot of users invested in Nitro fancy emoticons and profile enchantments

Even without that, its just a much slicker and more useable system.

I really want to love matrix but at least last time I tried it, the app was very noticeably more clunky and featureless.

I care for privacy. But there has to be a compromise between privacy and socializing otherwise we would all use letters with encrypted text, no?

Not really, because the security of letters is guaranteed by the state. The security of Discord is guaranteed by some private citizens based in the US. At least on paper the state exists for the benefit of the people. Discord exists for the benefit of investors who primarily seem to operate out of China and the US - foreign countries to me.

> At least on paper

But how is this relevant to a discussion of reality?

How did they get that address?

“ APNIC's research group held the IP addresses 1.1.1.1 and 1.0.0.1. While the addresses were valid, so many people had entered them into various random systems that they were continuously overwhelmed by a flood of garbage traffic. APNIC wanted to study this garbage traffic but any time they'd tried to announce the IPs, the flood would overwhelm any conventional network.”

On a separate note, why was cloudflare given the ownership of 1.1.1.1?

It is explained in that blogpost from Cloudflare

'We offered Cloudflare's network to receive and study the garbage traffic in exchange for being able to offer a DNS resolver on the memorable IPs'

That so stupid.

...I want it.

Wonder who will coin said term. Before AI. Pure clean internet 1991-2022

You sure about that "pure clean" part?

Pre-AI internet.

This is awesome. Well done.

> steam was terrible when it came out

Do people really think this? I remember applying updates to CS before steam and it was awful. Steam streamlined that and gave us a much needed friends list. I never ever thought steam the application was a bad.

the friends list didn't work for 5 or so years and neither did the download limiter (not a big deal these days, but on dialup... yeah)

the UI was exceptionally slow and it took forever to do anything

this wasn't a meme for no reason: https://imgur.com/a/bpGpe0o

I spent ages looking for that meme recently, thanks!

ha, im just forgetful. thank you.

Internet and DRM back then were absolutely shit. So a company coming along and embracing DRM in a consumer friendly way during a time where DRM was rightfully a major topic of contention put a lot of negativity out there.

Few people then knew that it was way ahead of its time, and even fewer knew how much of a fight valve would be putting up against capitalist regimes trying to kill gaming.

that was a long article

What do you guys use to organize your local videos and photos? Photos is great on MacOS, I need a windows alternative.

I used to do this. Now I self host vaultwarden since it allows me to use that database with faceID. Can keepass do that?

I like keypass, but merging my android and pc versions every so often is a task I'd like to automate. I dont do google/apple cloud so avoiding that.

I use the Strongbox iOS client. It reads .kdbx files, integrates with apple sign-in features, and supports faceID.

https://apps.apple.com/us/app/strongbox-password-manager/id8...

I use the Keepass2Android and it integrates with the OS fingerprint reader, so it's likely the same for faceunlock but I don't use that.

termius - new terminal app. I can save hosts, chain together hosts and then easily connect. sftp built right into it. honestly, it feels like cheating in terminal.
