I do that, and I'm also planning to use icloud photos downloader [0], a python script to download photos, so I can download those directly on another machine running Linux.

Maybe now open-source projects will get off of Discord for their official chat/support?

If only Tiny Core Linux had had better tooling and if only corporations liked simplicity, it might have been more popular…

Bulidroot is popular and simple alternative. But corporations prefer complexity.

We at darkscience used buildroot for a simple ZNC SBC[0] distribution which we deployed to an Orange Pi Zero that we sold at 33C3[1].

It was great! I highly recommend!

It didn't take long to get started and while the compile times were pretty large (wonder if NIX or Bazel could help here?) it ended up with absolutely microscopic resource requirements.

I've had a reasonable amount of luck with a combination of Buildroot and Bazel. I use Buildroot to assemble a minimal Base OS with just the kernel, bootloader and a few system services. Then the application layer is built with Bazel and assembled into a set of squashfs images which are mounted as overlay filesystems at boot time. The whole thing is shipped as a SWUpdate file built with the Bazel layer.

Because most of the iteration is happening in the Bazel layers I can generate a full system update in about 15 seconds with everything being fully reproducible.

I thought this was debunked last year? [0]

> Soon after, The Verge's Wes Davis attempted to replicate using every Apple product in a single day. During that day, Davis said he mostly used the MX Master 3, but sometimes switched to a Magic Mouse or Magic Trackpad.

> In other words, it was Davis who said he himself used a Logitech mouse, not Cook.

As usual though, rebuttals/acquittals/etc never get as much traction as the original bs or accusations...

Like so many security gestures from Big Tech, it’s a win wrapped in a curse (or lock-in, tracking, what have you depending on the solution. )

Doesn’t matter. If using this and I send you an email, and my account disappears, you can no longer read the email you received because it’s merely a link to read something from my account on Google.

At this point I'm assuming this is the case when I read any article online, until proven otherwise.

What's not clear to me is, who's listening? Like if I install this app and I get buried under a crumbled building and send out the SOS signal... Are there any receivers???

People, nearby, with the app installed who open it during a disaster. That's why it needs to be in more hands.

Ideally, there would be an option to have your phone "listen" in the background and notify you if anyone needs help. I haven't added that yet.

For now: let's say I'm in a neighborhood. An earthquake happens, a building collapses. I have the app installed and I'm fine. So, I open it and I get close to each building and check if there are any survivors under it.

You'll keep broadcasting, until your battery runs out. It's not heavy on the battery, so it can broadcast for a while.

I'll clarify that in the readme.

Great idea... But appears to be not practical.

I agree it's not practical in its current state.

The more important problem right now is signaling. Recovery is a much more flexible problem to solve.

there was some work on using apple's underlying BLE / mesh network they use for their tracking devices, but with open / alt devices

Something like that could be useful if anyone with an iphone going nearby the signal was enough to pick it up, without them requiring to have the app installed.

This is exactly the goal. It was a little difficult to do, so I just postponed it.

TLDR; Apple devices scanning in the background require a lot of workarounds [1].

Another comment suggested proposing this to Apple [2]. If this were built by Apple internally, it would be game-changing. A little delusion never hurt anyone :seenoevil:
