Awhile back I was researching cloud instances for performance, And I noticed that AWS didn't have the latest generations of AMD/Intel. Which are far superior to Graviton 4.

It seems obvious to me that AWS using their market dominance to shift workloads to Graviton.

I think Graviton would still be much more energy efficient though? (I'm not sure)

I believe the main motivator for AWS is efficiency, not performance. $ of income per watt spend is much better for them on Graviton.

This sort of makes sense. If there is no competitive advantage in buying the latest AMD or Intel CPUs, why buy them when you can just deploy a generic (ARM licensed) CPU at cheaper prices.

The competitive advantage right now is in NVIDIA chips and I guess AWS needs all their free cash to buy those instead of non-competitive advantage CPUs.

At what point was that true? For example right now ec2 has granite rapids cpus available which are very much the latest and greatest from intel.

I imagine it can take time to actually validate and build out that new infrastructure at scale after AMD/Intel announces these products to the market. It wouldn't surprise me if hyperscalers like AWS, Google, Microsoft, et. al. get a little bit of early previews of this hardware, but it still takes time to negotiate sales, buy the chips, and then actually receive the new chips and make actually useful systems.

Meanwhile, when AWS announces a new chip its probably something they have already been building out in their datacenters.

>Which are far superior to Graviton 4.

Not if you are looking at price/performance. AWS could be taking a loss to elevate the product though, no way to know for sure.

If they were taking a loss, they wouldn't run a crapton of internal workloads on Graviton.

What do you mean by mood?

To quote Groundhog Day, "Don't drive angry".

Any mood intense enough is extremely distracting and dangerous for driving, whether anger, infatuation, mourning, etc.

Because of this some countries have psychological testing to check your emotional stability when you get your license renewed, but realistically your emotions will be compromised for short durations much more often than that.

The test is a long term ( 15-30 minutes ) strict focus test. You don't have time to fully check everything you do on it, so you do your best and the psychologist verifies both that you have a sufficient ability to focus as a % of tasks reasonably responded to, and that you don't have large "emotional gaps" in your responses where your mind wandered to your bonnie for 45 seconds and you didn't interact with the tasks much or at all.

One might wonder what computer you are using, I think ZX Spectrum is safe.

I do!

I love it so much, it has a great balance between: readability, fast write/compile/debug cycle and great performance.

On tip: LLM is God send for it. So many times I find what I was looking for written in some other language and the LLM does the conversion.

The later. While I applaud Israel capabilities the are not unique. USA and china has more mony, talent and access to the hardware/software that is actually used to build the networks

I would feel that the responsible adult that was in charge of my protection is doing a lousy job. So he should surrender and spare us the war.

How would you feel? Insulted?

> the responsible adult that was in charge of my protection

So you're infantilizing an entire nation to make this point?

> So he should surrender and spare us the war.

Do you have any measure on this sentiment among the population currently? If it is, as it is in so many places, that the leaders actions are detached from the will of the voters, then what should we make of this?

Should they be allowed to surrender to a _neutral_ party?

Should they be allowed to keep their state?

Is there any reason not to presume a peaceful negotiation under these terms? Is there any reason to attempt to assassinate the party trying to coordinate this?

> How would you feel? Insulted?

Violated. These are _our_ emergency broadcast services. They should be used for the intended purpose and not to force an angry political message on a powerless population.

Do you not have any good faith in yourself for this topic?

Be kind. Don't be snarky. Converse curiously; don't cross-examine. Edit out swipes.

Comments should get more thoughtful and substantive, not less, as a topic gets more divisive.

When disagreeing, please reply to the argument instead of calling names. "That is idiotic; 1 + 1 is 2, not 3" can be shortened to "1 + 1 is 2, not 3."

Every phone in Israel got a special message when missiles from Iran were fired. No application, no nothing, just by the virtue of being connected to to an Israeli phone cell tower (it worked even on imported phones)

My understanding that it is a standard feature, this is how earthquake warning works in Japan.

Point being there is no "hacking" involved. Standard feature

With all that being said, I'd consider that a gross misuse of emergency functionality.

I don't like having missiles fired at me, but if it's going to happen, an emergency warning would be greatly appreciated.

As someone mentioned, I’m talking about the parent context i.e. using it for Netanyahu’s speech.

A warning to take shelter from incoming missiles seems quite reasonable use of emergency broadcast systems to me.

I believe he’s talking about using it for Netanyahu’s speech

Basically a modern version of leaflets.

I'm using Framework with Windows and AMD and I have excellent hibernate/sleep time... It is really a Linux thing. I remember a post on reddit that claims that the Bluefin distribution has excellent battery life.

It amazes me how the legend of ARM being more efficient than x86 took hold. I'm not saying that we don't have a more efficient ARM processors BUT it has nothing to do with the ISA. What you gain with a simple encoder (ARM) you gain with code density (x86) and after that it is converted to microcode. You wouldn't gain more than single percent if any.

Process node is by far more important (5nm , 3nm, etc) and usually Apple gets access to them first. Also placing the memory in the CPU package also proved to be great for efficiency (case of point is Intel's Lunar lake that can last like forever) and last but the least is the intergraded GPU that no one seems to talk about and their respective efficiency (cause there are like 30 people in the whole world that can truly make and educated talk about them and their ISA)

I know it is not popular around here, but until Zed gets a windows version:

Zed's dead baby, Zed's dead

There is a Windows version if you're willing to use unofficial builds. I've been using it successfully for a few weeks. There's a few more rough corners than in the official Mac/Linux version, but it's usable.

Thanks. I might once I'll be in a mood to get frustrated by rough corners :-)

Sure. This why they block google search, amazon and onlyfans. LOL.

The wall always had two functions, the obvious blocking from getting people in, but it also blocks from getting your people out

Seems like Onlyfans-like content also exists in China. They banned "erotic eating of bananas on livestreams" 1), so if they're fire-fighting, there must be a fire...

Put a woman in front of a camera and have her not expose herself challenge: impossible

Please don't comment like this here. It's not what HN is for and it destroys what it is for. We have to ban accounts that comment like this repeatedly.

Help, help, /r/theredpill is leaking!

Chinese people who get out have to face the reality of a very racist Western world who will never appreciate them.

As China develops and becomes richer eventually the idea of moving from Shanghai to New York no longer looks as attractive.

Huh? If there's one place (outside of China) that doesn't discriminate against the Chinese, it'd have to be New York.

Id also argue if China was open to the world we would see the level of Chinese racism against foreigners is very high indeed. Likely higher given their closed media systems unable to tolerate foreign opinion.

I'd pick Vancouver.
