We actively encouraged what you describe as our short comings. It was in our map posting guidelines that you include lots of screenshots and a well-written write up.
I don't think the issue lied in the community. The larger it grew the better the maps became.
Really the blame falls on me. I had a platform for distributing maps and I had the audience. What I couldn't do was grow up quick enough to really allow the site to reach its potential.
