>We can't be required to be smarter than the software

Jesus - that's the kind of stuff that makes me afraid for the future of humanity. Yeah I get that this may very well have been caused by human stupidity and also that the software that powered the car should have been smarter than to do that, but that quote just gave me the chills.

I read it as meaning "we can't be expected to understand the car's algorithms well enough to be able to predict what the car is going to do and react to the output of its computations in real time."

Which as a general sentiment, abstracted from the particularities of this case, is entirely reasonable.

Sure.

But in this particular case, the quote is saying: "One can't possibly be expected to understand the two sets of clearly written dire warnings and strident instructions one was required to acknowledge before enabling this feature and using this feature. And one can't then be expected to bear the blame for proceeding to fail to follow the instructions one was given to ensure the safe operation of one's car while using this feature.".

That is why the quote is so disheartening.
