Why are indicator lights software controllable?


It varies by manufacturer/model. Some have a hardware/firmware only solution that can't really be turned off from the OS. Other times it's controlled by the driver. Often there isn't an API for controlling it, but you can memory patch the driver. As for why, I'd say it's just another case of security design by people who don't fully understand security. Similarly to why toy bears are accessible from the internet. [1]
