Well, it is commonly called "scharfes S" (sharp S), at least in Austria -- and I'm pretty sure in Germany too.
I certainly plan to use it in practice, and have already started telling my friends and relatives about it. The substitution with "SS" always rubbed me the wrong way, since it should be "SZ". The capital "ẞ" solves that problem for me, and I no longer have more letters in the uppercase version of certain words, which is nice.
