So I can use this as a secure proxy to get around region restrictions? In the same way I do ssh -D? And then configure the proxy on my browser?

It is more low level than that and closer to OpenVPN in terms of setup. Which means not bad.
The main gain is in efficiency. It is much less resource intensive and thus sometimes faster.
