I spent some time looking into this recently. My vs was rocket chat.

While Matrix is very impressive in its ambition, in the end we went with rocket chat because it's more mature, and frankly a simpler stack is easier to wrap your head around and start making meaningful changes.

That said, I really hope this ends up being a useful protocol for interoperation between services. The potential is huge.
