it's only recently that the updates on ubuntu and other systemd'd linux distributions have been frequently writing resolv.conf.
the suspicion that a user is so incapable of having already set DNS servers is so strong that whatever-is-doing-this doesn't even bother to ask if or check whether the resolv.conf file is different from default.
this seems a little too critical of, possibly insulting to the intelligence of, people who use these versions of linux.
