iirc Amazon worked like this for their first n years before the difficulties that resulted made a SOA more compelling.

I think there's a middle ground between microservices and a single monolith for a large global corporation.

Most people aren't amazon. If you've scaled to the point that you have Amazon's problems, you also have the money to solve it THEN. not before.
