Seems like another thing that would help is every browser and media service adopted AV1 for video and WEBP for images. That itself would save an insane amount of bandwidth (maybe a quarter of the world's bandwidth).

AV1 encoding/decoding is still expensive. Netflix only started rolling it out for part of its catalog recently.
It's been interesting watching them scale up Netflix Party in the meantime...
