I know this is common advice, but I expect history will very justifiably tag this kind of talk as victim-blaming.

I think fundamentally small and middle-sized companies are building websites improperly (cargo culting companies that can afford million dollar mistakes), which surely exacerbates the situation.

But we used to be able to count on a person providing a service not to overcharge you because it was bad for business. When they didn't, it was news.
