Sounds pretty similar to the concept of “software agents” which was popular in the mid ‘90s: http://www.cs.ox.ac.uk/people/michael.wooldridge/pubs/iee-re...

Part of the concept was that the agents would actually roam onto servers on the internet on your behalf raising complicated questions around how to sandbox the agent code (came in useful for VPSs and AWS-style lambdas in the end).
