It's very hard finding high quality things that are cheap, and it's very easy finding low quality things that are expensive.
Rule of thumb is to read the 3-start (and below) reviews for anything that you're planning on buying. 4 and 5 stars are generally customers who had been paid to write those reviews.
Almost everything you can see around you probably went through a 50 year period like semiconductors have. Modern concrete making structures cheaper, larger, and quicker to build is one that comes to mind. Cars are another.
What you need is a kind of photo polymer that is polarizable by an electric field. Then you can write data in 3D from mold-able pour-able plastic resin.
